Verizon/Straight Talk iPhone 5 on Page Plus and T-Mobile.

According to posts on Howard Forums, the iPhone 5 sold by Walmart's
Straight Talk/Verizon service can be activated on Page Plus. This
version of the iPhone 5 lacks LTE (it's there but disabled). It's the
lack of LTE that makes it possible to activate it on Page Plus since 4G
LTE phones can't be activated on Page Plus.

If activated on Straight Talk, it's $45 per month for unlimited
everything, but there is no roaming and no LTE. The lack of roaming is
really a deal killer. The AT&T iPhone 4 on Straight Talk does allow
voice and text roaming. Straight Talk is no longer selling AT&T SIM
cards, so to get the iPhone 5 on StraightTalk/AT&T is difficult and
expensive.

This iPhone 5 would be ideal for T-Mobile's $30/month 5GB 3G (unlimited
2G) data plan + unlimited text and 100 voice minutes plan because you
can use Page Plus in areas with no T-Mobile service. If you jailbreak
the iPhone 5 then you can install a VOIP Google Voice client to make
VOIP calls rather than pay for more minutes on T-Mobile or Page Plus.

This is true, but the cost for a basic Page Plus account is minimal, $10
every 120 days. If it's only used occasionally, when in non-T-Mobile
areas, it's not a big deal. Already some people here carry a separate
Page Plus phone as a backup to T-Mobile.

I don't know. On my Droid Incredible 2 it's six taps.

menu>settings>wireless & networks>>mobile networks>preferred
network>GSM/UMTS Mode.

T-Mobile coverage is not good in my area (northern California) so the
$30 plan would be of no use to me.

Page Plus offers data for 99�/MB, so she does have data access if
absolutely necessary. You're not going to want to watch videos, send
hi-resolution photos, or stream music at 99�/MB, but for occasional
non-media use it's okay.

I have 10MB of data on my "The 12" plan on Page Plus. With Wi-Fi so
widespread I find that I only use 1-2MB per month.

Looking at my Galaxy S3's Data Usage, it says I used 320MB from the period
Feb 9 - Mar 9, my first full month of ownership. The Google Play Store,
Gmail, and Maps were the biggest consumers during that period, respectively.
In the shorter period since then, Mar 10 - Mar 28, I've used 266MB, with the
top three consumers being Flipboard, Maps, and then Gmail in a close 3rd
spot.

I have an iPhone on Verizon's LTE data network. Like you, my data use
(through Verizon) is quite low. In my case, it is not because of widespread
(or ubiquitous) WiFi. It is because I have WiFi at home and at work.
Once I noticed how low my Verizon data use is, I stopped using other
WiFi networks. My Verizon data usage remains quite low.

My experience with WiFi in restaurants and other retail locations: data
rate is somewhat slow and VERY erratic.

We had it turned off so it's not accidentally used, not really knowing
her way around a smartphone. She can practice on wifi.

I root the Android phones and install Droid Wall on them. Only a couple
of apps are allowed to use mobile data. The problem with so many Android
apps is that they want to serve up advertising from the web and will use
whatever connection they find, even when the app doesn't actually need
the web at all.
