Anywhere from 20 Kbps to 200 Kbps depending on where you are on what
AT&T has done for and to the network locally.

There is a new Network Speed Test site where iPhone users are reporting
their experiences. Looks like results are closer to 200 kbps on
average. I happen to get around 140 kbps at my house.

Where?

Where?

A month or two ago many folks only got 20 to 40 Kbps with EDGE, but
ATT has been tweaking/upgrading EDGE under a program internally known
as "FINE EDGE", why they keep it a secret is beyond me.

http://dslreports.com is also good for speed tests.

Site name: http://www.iphonenetworktest.com/

I get 140kbps consistently on an iPhone inside my house in Austin TX.

IOt's too bad thats a web site I would never go to again, what with
their bogus ad for a Free iPhone.

I suspect those folks didn't know their EDGE from their elbows, and were
actually using GPRS.

Because it reminds people once again the iPhone uses a slower network
than other AT&T customers? It's like saying your new canned vegetables
taste 20% better than your previous ones and then trying to sell them at
a farmer's market!

It's like buying a brand new Ford Mustang, but with the 4 cyl fuel saving
engine option.

It's real pretty, nice to "Show off" to friends but little performance. It
will get you to the grocery store, but forget any real "Performance".

GPRS/EDGE is like shitting thru a sock. Some poop will get thru, maybe enough
to do what you want.
In other words, it's just fine for reading e-mail, but don't expect to watch
TV with it (Sprint's EVDO is good for that).

Guess you're unaware that iPhone supports 802.11g WiFi, now with 10's
of thousands of Hotspot locations, many for FREE, and if you have
AT&T/Yahoo dsl, all the AT&T wifi locations are free. A simple Google
will find lists of FREE locations in your neighborhood.

So using your flawed analogy, its like flipping a switch and having a
V8 in your Mustang.

...a V8 that only works in the parking lots of coffeeshops, bookstores
and the public library...

I have a perfectly fine WinMo EDGE/Wi-Fi phone, and let me tell you Wi-Fi
isn't nearly as ubiquitous as you pretend. I spend much of my time on
slower EDGE (which I find perfectly adequate for mobile use.)

Again, I have nothing against EDGE, but that's a separate issue-
pretending that wi-fi is an adequate substitue for 3G is like saying a
landline and pocketful of quarters for a payphone is an adequate
substitute for cellular!

Only if you have 3mbps (Elite/Pro?) or faster DSL service, not free if
you 1.5mbps or slower.
