Hell yes! Just like any other type of media you run programs from - or
install programs onto your hard-drive. For the most part though - the
people who press the cd check for viruses before they burn cd-roms.

There has been cases of them slipping and a live virus is still on the
cd. As a matter of fact - there is at least one CD that is being
advertized as the library of viruses. All the viruses on the cd are
quite alive and just as deadly. The disk is suposed to be a way of
testing your virus program. Kinda the 'drink poison to see if the
ancidote works." :)

I have had a problem with Toolworks encyclopedia that acted like a virus
although it could have been just dumb programming. When I ran Setup to install
the CD,
a dialog box asked if I would let Toolworks change my Autoexec.Bat file to
update the path statement. I clicked the yes button and the following
happened:

1) Toolworks installed a protected directory that could not be deleted.
2) Toolworks deleted autoexec.* which not only took out autoexec.bat but all
my backup files.
3) Toolworks issued a set path statement (invisibly to me) setting the path to
the newly installed Toolworks directory.
4) At this point I could run Toolworks but nothing else. I couldn't even
issue a DOS command because the path to DOS was wiped out. Fortunately, the
set path statement still worked and allowed me to set path to /DOS. However,
all my autoexec files were gone. I was lucky that I had a recent print out of
autoexec.bat and could reconfigure it from the print out.

So, was this a virus?? If not, it certainly was a pain in the ass!
