Are There Counterfeit Brand Name Tires

I bought a set of 4 new, original equipment, brand name tires for my wifes
Camry. She mildly bumped a curb while parking. Now the tire has a gash in
the sidewall. I never saw anything like that in 50 years of driving.
Either the tire had a phoney brand name on it or they have really cheapened
tires lately.
Anyone know which it is?
