Yahoo says so. The very name of this group spells hate, according to them.
Me, I think their OWN name is a particularly accurate description of them: a
bunch of Yahoos.

This was just forwarded to me by John Varley:

Yahoo Mail will now let people register usernames that include the word
"allah," after a ban designed to thwart prejudice went astray.

The policy reversal, announced Wednesday, came too late for Linda Callahan
of Ashfield, Mass., who set up a Google Gmail account after being rejected
by Yahoo Mail because of the presence of "allah" in her name, said her son,
Ed Callahan.

"She was disgusted by (Yahoo's policy) and saddened," he said. "It was
discriminatory. They disallowed 'allah' but allowed 'jesus' and 'god,' and I
don't think there is a rational explanation for that."

The existence of the ban made a bit of a splash on the Web after it was
reported in The Daily Hampshire Gazette on Friday and picked up by The
Register and Slashdot this week.

Early Wednesday, Yahoo issued a statement about its new policy and the
reasons for the original ban.

"A small number of people registered for IDs using specific terms with the
sole purpose of promoting hate, and then used those IDs to post content that
was harmful or threatening to others, thus violating Yahoo's Terms of
Service," the statement said. "'Allah' was one word being used for these
purposes, with instances tied to defamatory language. We took steps to help
protect our users by prohibiting use of the term in Yahoo usernames. We
recently re-evaluated the term 'Allah,' and users can now register for IDs
with this word because it is no longer a significant target for abuse."

Though his mother is boycotting Yahoo, Ed Callahan said he wasn't.

"I went ahead for fun and registered 'allahs_in_callahan' in Yahoo," he
said, adding that he has devoted a Web page to the Yahoo ban.

It seems the situation has been a problem since at least June 2005, judging
from a Web page (which includes profanity) created by someone named
"Kallahar," who said Yahoo barred him from registering his name. Apparently,
"allah" was not banned by Yahoo until after 2000, the site says.

You wanna hold all Muslims responsible for the actions of a bunch of
idiots? Should punish all Priests because some are pedophiles?

Yeah, there is a very unstable part of the world that is primarily
Muslim. It doesn't mean all Muslims are irrational or that we should
judge the whole faith by their actions.

Your comments are exactly the type that I hope the Yahoo! story
exposes. They are way too common, based on lack of information (or just
on hate) and very harmful.

Yeah, there's a part of the world populated by too large a
percentage of irrational people (actually, most of the world
seems to be populated by an overwhelming percentage of people
whose rationality I find suspect, most emphatically including
this country.) Where the predominantly-Muslim parts of the
world differ from the rest seems to be that the more reasonable
residents of that part of the world lack either the power or will
to suppress the violence of the lunatic fringe. This isn't limited
to Islam, of course, but the Muslim lunatic fringe seems to be both
larger and more lunatic than ohers.

That the denizens of the Muslim-dominated regions seem to delight
in finding offenses to which to object (and where they perpetuate
the same offenses against other groups with glee and abandon) has
made me rather indifferent to their point of view. In usenet terms
their vitriolic flamewar has led me to killfile them. They'll be
pissed off no matter what we do or say, so the hell with them.

Just my two zorkmids' worth.

It's not that they're shrinking violets. It's that some large subset

If the priests who don't molest children nevertheless find it
acceptable and endeavor to shield their misbehaving bretheren from
punishment, then it's no longer an issue of a few bad apples, but a
systemic problem. Same goes for Islam.

So you believe that most (all?) Muslims find violence acceptable and
shield those that partake in violence? That just is not factual, and a
little bit silly. I know, I know, you see lots of irrational Muslims on
TV and not many speaking out against them. That has to do to with what
brings ratings, not with reality. Take a look at:

I said, "Where the predominantly-Muslim parts of the world

differ from the rest seems to be that the more reasonable
residents of that part of the world lack either the power
or will to suppress the violence of the lunatic fringe."

That fatwa was issued by the U.S. Muslim Religious Council.
I'm sure that you're aware that the U.S. isn't dominated by
Muslims. Where religious violence occurs in this country
it's treated as a heinous crime and we lack neither the
power nor the will to suppress the lunatics that perpetrate
such acts.

Now, if we could just get the lunatic fringe to burn
*themselves* in protest like the Buddhist monks did in
Vietnam....

The writings of a few U.S. based Muslim organizations doesn't change what's

Matthew -

It's always interesting when people can generalize a whole people with
one image, and base all their opinions on that image alone. Someone
mentions gays and some people picture a promiscuous, flamboyant gay
dude. Others picture a committed couple living responsibly. You mention
Christians and some people picture radical conservatives using religion
as an excuse for their policies, others picture devote people living a
clean life.

You mention Muslims in Iraq and some people picture the radicals in
Sadir City. Others picture Iraqi's risking their lives by joining the
Iraqi police force, parents trying to get an education for their kids.

You mention French Muslims and some picture a couple hundred rioting
teenagers. Other picture thousands of, well, average people that happen
to be French and Muslim.

American Muslims live responsibly, but they fit the wrong image so
discount them.

It's fine to have a beef with individuals who are rioters, terrorists,
people with illogical positions. My problem is when that beef is
generalized to an entire religion, as in your last email. Be mad at the
terrorists and rioters, that's fine. Just keep in mind that that image
defines a minority of Muslims, even in each of the countries you list.

"What's happening in the rest of the world" is poverty and lack of
education (and the hopelessness that results) playing out in a section
of the world that happens to be primarily Muslim. It does not follow
that being Muslim is the cause of those problems.

Generalization is a powerful tool, and not one I'm willing to divest
myself of for the sake of political correctness. At some point _not_
making such generalizations becomes willful blindness. At some point
it's not just an individual problem, but a systemic one.

There's poverty all over, not just in Muslim countries. And many of
those involved in terrorism, such as the 9/11 hijackers and the
British subway bombers, simply aren't that poor. THAT generalization
doesn't hold up.

Des won't hit you, dear. Me, she might hit. <g> But you know she
appreciates the value of a good snuggle. As do I, as do most, really.

(actually, I doubt Des would hit me. But I do know what she'd do...)

Here is your cup of regular coffee. You will find cream and sugar/or
sweet and low.
And for my famous treat I have made eclairs from scratch.
You have a choice of chocolate or fruit filling with freshly whipped
cream with a tablespoon of Hazelnut coffee flavoring.

The music is mellow. Simon and Garfunkel are singing.

"It's a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
And shadows wash the room.
And we sit and drink our coffee. . ."

<sighing> Thanks Wes.

I'm not too greedy. We can share.

Denny will be happy to get some Desi-hugs. And to offer hugs to both
Desi and Bette.

WTF is "What The F***" and "snort" is the sound of expelling whatever
liquid you've been drinking through your nostrils.

The former you can probably find listed at
http://www.acronymfinder.com/ and I'm sure there must be some
reference that would list the latter, I'd try OneLook.com first.

Which gave me:

Quick definitions (snort)

# noun: a disrespectful laugh
# noun: a cry or noise made to express displeasure or contempt
# verb: indicate contempt by breathing noisily and forcefully
through the nose (Example: "She snorted her disapproval of the
proposed bridegroom")
# verb: make a snorting sound by exhaling hard (Example: "The critic
snorted contemtuously") [sic]
# verb: ingest through the nose (Example: "The drug addict was
snorting cocaine every night")
# verb: inhale through the nose
# verb: inhale recreational drugs
# Word origin info is available.

I think PD meant that they can post their hate speech, and continual
slanders and libels, but not get called on it. I would kinda like to
see some way to enforce 'you're responsible for what you say'--but not
at the expense of the Internet or any other kind of free speech.

Again, since no one apparently saw it the first time around, here's a
list of a ton of links that I found quite easily via a couple of simple
google searches, some of which I'd seen before, others that were new

Muslim condemnation of terrorism, extremism, and suicide bombings by
Muslim political and religious leaders as well as normal Muslim
folk all around the world. They weren't exactly hard to find. Of course,
most of them weren't front page news in the US (actually, the cnn article
was, for a bit), of course. After all, if you're wanting to justify high
civilian casualties, it really helps if you can villanize the entire
population.
