It says no documents found, when I just used the newsgroup name,
alt.callahans
The search page certainly looks different. This is the url I wound
up at, http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en&q=&hl=en&
Anyone else have this problem today ?
Thanks,
D.J.

I finally found this page:
http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?
If you type in alt.callahans, you get crap that can only be searched
by subject, not date. Although you can order it in date sequence.
But if you just want to look at a particular year, no go.
If someone could kindly email me a location, etc. for an
alt.callahans archive I would appreciate it. Google has flunked out
of the newsgroup archive 'business' by gross idiocy.

I've never been successful with the Groups Advanced Search; I just go to
Groups, then down at the bottom of that page go to "All Usenet" then scroll
to "alt" and again to get to "alt.callahans" then "search within this
group".
As you say, it worked just fine before.

Interestingly enough, Teresa Nielsen Hayden appears to be having the
same problem, as described on a brand-new entry over on Making Light.
http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/010783.html
You might check there for some additional information and possible
solutions. The Fluorosphere is often quite helpful, nearly rivaling
the Patrons of the Place at times.
(Besides, it's a good site with a great group of folks.)

AND... in reading through the thread on Making Light (psst, by the
way, you recognize the name of the proprietress, right? From Tor
Books, Spider's publisher?), I have run across the following links
posted by a longtime Fluorospherian, one Jon Meltzer. According to
Jon, Slashdot has a story on this problem, here:
http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/11/09/2029206&from=rss
and if you go to the following link (which takes you to a post in the
comments on the Slashdot story), there are instructions on how to work
around the issue for now:

There is an archive in Macedonia:
http://www.macedonia.eu.org/scripts/dnewsweb.exe?cmd=xover&group=alt.callahans&utag=
Didn't check it yet - my Macedonian is not that good ;o))
But you might be able to search... just give it a try.

There's been a major change ... for the worse, apparently... in Google Groups
search. There are a lot of Microsoft MVPs complaining about it on the private
groups.

There's been continual degredation ever since Google took it over from
Deja News. And, unfortunately, the other reasonably complete usenet
archive (I forget its name now) went away about the same time Google
goobled Deja News.
