Born 03-22-1822, Rosa (Marie-Rosalie) Bonheur, French painter and
sculptor, probably the most celebrated woman artist to actually gain
international recognition while she was still alive (until Georgia O'Keeffe). The
oldest of four children, her father who was a artist gave RB her first art
lessons. At 12 her mother died and she took over the duties of raising her
siblings on the edge of poverty but was able, with the cooperation of her
father, to continue drawing and sent to the same school as her brothers when
she refused to become a seamstress.
Fascinated by animals, RB dressed as a man to study animals both in
the country and in Paris. At 19 two of her pictures were accepted for the
annual Paris salon. At 23 she won the Salon's King Louis Philippe medal. Her
career based on meticulous knowledge of animal anatomy in her startlingly
realistic paintings coupled with artistic skill made her an icon in France and
became the first woman named an officer of the Legion of Honor.
At 27 she succeeded her father as Director of l`Ecole Imperiale de Dessin
(where her sister was an instructor). At 30 she received official police
permission to wear men's clothes and by age 34 she had amassed enough
money to buy a home at By, near Fountainbleau which she shared with her
domestic partner of 40 years Nathalie Micas. Her later domestic partner Anna
Klumpke became RB's best known biographer. RB chose to be buried next to
"her beloved Nathalie."
A romantic, she painted vigorously, meticulously, and large. Her "Horses
Threshing Corn" there are ten life-size horses. At the time, it was the largest
animal picture ever painted.
A personal note. Without realizing it, WOA author turned a corner at
the Metropolitan Museum of Art and was suddenly face to face with "The Horse
Fair." My knees almost buckled. One can almost smell the horses and the
sweat of the men handling them - the sting of the dust.
Both Bonheur and O'Keeffe painted their best known works LARGE ...
hmmm.

Don't let anyone tell you there weren't notable and effective women
throughout history. They were always there, but historians failed to note
them in our histories so that the women of each generation have had to
reinvent themselves.
