BB: Zone Alarm pro, Firefox and Thunderbird

Yes. I have it and Firefox and Thunderbird installed.
It probably isn't the three interacting. Have Tim check to make sure that
Microsoft security program(s) aren't running and/or that something like
McAfee didn't come pre-installed (if this is a new computer).
Best is to turn off Microsoft security entirely including the security
updates
(not the same as the OS updates).

I use ZoneAlarm Free. My settings alterations are mainly to do with
the zones. Set the Modem and other LAN computers as Trusted, all other
settings are Internet.
The only other settings required are in Program Control. Check what is
allowed to be able to access the internet and limit Server access to
virtually nil. The only program I allow Server access is Utorrent for
P2P downloads and uploads. Everything else is either Ask or Deny.
He should be wary of blanket Allow especially for programs that really
do not need any access. Access to the trusted Zone is usually
harmless.

You don't have to do it that way. If you have ZA/ZAP/ZASS (I have ZASS
so YMMV) installed just click on the icon in the tray
click on 'program control' -->'programs' and it will give you a list of
everything.
You can left-click on the name of a program to get info on it and l-c on
its line over
'trusted' to set the trust level or the various check marks/x marks/?
marks to set what you
want ZA to do about the program and the amount of access you want to
give it.
(be careful with this: you x-mark too many things or the wrong things
and you might have to
go back in to replace some of the x's with checks before you can go
anywhere).
Your best bet, at least to start is to leave all that alone 'though.
Go to 'main' under 'program control' and set program control to auto so
that ZA can learn and set
'smartdefense advisor' to automatic and you should be okay. You'll get
a lot of alerts to begin with
as ZA checks with you for your prefs. Pay attention to them, don't just
automatically click 'okay'.
You can always go into 'programs' and set stuff manually (as above) if
you want to later.
As to running the virus scan....
A-V/A-S --> Main : if it is not already, toggle the 'on' button.
Newest version of ZASS has both run at the same time.
Run your first scan (you can keep working: it doesn't care).
It should already be configured to be 'always on' without you having to
do anything else.
The only other thing you might want to set up is an auto-run about once
a week.
You can find where to do that under 'advanced options' on that same page.
ZA scans everything as it is downloaded. You don't have to give it the
IPs of Thunderbird/Firefox or any of
the other programs because it won't scan anything outside your computer.
You might, however, want to go in every week or so and hit the update
button for A-V/A-S manually.
For some reason my auto-updates aren't working (this could be a problem
for you or not).

They do not need to be set in the Zones section. Open Program Control
->Programs and set Access permissions to Allow for both Trusted and
Internet and set Server Permissions to Deny for both.
Zones refers to the current machine and any other machine attached to
the LAN along with the Modem/Router. You need the IP addresses as
supplied by the DHCP server which is (should be) probably in the
Modem/Router. ZA should automatically detect the local machine and the
Modem. Simply change the Modem designation to Internet.
I don't consider the ZA virus scanner to be an improvement over any of
the other virus scanners on the market. I get excellent results from
Avast and I have also had excellent results from AVG Free in the past.
Both are free for personal use.
In fact I had the best results from an early versions of ZA. In my
opinion the later versions are simply slowing my machine down and not
performing any additional, useful services. A firewall should be just
that. It should not pretend to be a be-all and end-all.
The other "Features" of Pro are simply window dressing and no use to
me. I disable the e-mail scanner as I use Mailwasher to vet my
accounts for spam and, as I use Thunderbird for e-mail I have to save
attachments to the drive before opening them which allows the virus
scanner to vet the files.

BOYC for all involved, I've just installed the latest version of ZASS,
for Win 7, and now it seems to be working properly, out of the box.
Maybe the version I was having problems with was for Vista.

Oh. Well you didn't say you had Vista.
Vista sucked and continued to suck: I'm convinced 'Vista' was actually
an acronym
for 'very incapable: sourcecode totally asshat' or something similar.
(I had XP and was happy with it and didn't upgrade...don't plan to either).

I didn't, I had XP on my recently died computer and the replacement
came pre-installed with Win 7, but I downloaded ZA before they
released their Win 7 version.
