Hi,
Does anyone know of a good CAD program for creating household/garden
designs? I need something very simple, that my mother can use, that would
allow her to create a house or garden design, then walk around it.
Years ago I used the 3d map editor on duke nukem 3d, sounds crude I know,
but it was very simple, you just create a box, for your area, then smaller
boxes inside for objects like desks, then you press a button, and you can
walk around, and change wall/floor colours, add sprits like lights etc. But
I can't get it to work, plus the graphics were crappy compared to todays
standards.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know
Cheers
Ben

You might try 3D Home Architect.

It's dirt cheap and it is amazingly intuitive. It definately
works on houses, has a selection of plants and I *think* that you
can add lines and simple shapes that wouldn't be in 3D (like lawn
borders, walkways, etc.).

That is such a creative and kool idea!

Have you tried getting into the computer games newsgroups to see
if you could get help getting it to work?

OK, non-serious question: When you set up all of those things on
DukeNukem, can you blow them up, too?

Excellent, I'll give it a try!

No, I might try, see what they say, it was back in the days of P200, 4mb
graphics and win98 was newly out. I'm now running amd 1.4ghz, 64mb graphics
and win2k, so I think it runs to fast, I have a slower pc in the loft I
might run it on.

Yeah, it was great, I created an exact duplicate of my house, with plant
pots positioned, tv, computer lamps, etc, You could even position where the
bad guys would stand, like pig cops or the women pole dancers (put them in
my bedroom of course) then you open the map in the game, and wonder around
with machine gun, or RPG and blow them up, glass smashs, computers get bust
screens, even trees burn if you hit them with the right weapon, like the rpg
or flame thrower.

Hmmmm ... if not, I should be coming into enough cash, shortly,
to upgrade from this ole '486/66 and I could give it to ya.

Stop laughing! I feel kinda special to be the only person left
in the world to be running something this old and slow ... except
for that guy in the Afghan desert who runs his off of a camel
dung powered generator.

Oh, the babes!

"Wanna dance?"

Must be kinda theraputic to be able to lay waste to everything
that you own without having to clean up the mess.

Punch 5 in 1 Home Design is very good for rendered landscape. It has a lot of
trees, bushes, plants, shrubs, mulch you can insert into a design. You can even
do Topography with it. You can actually see plant growth through the years, you
can walk around your design, export your design as a BMP file, and print it in
color!

If your mother is interested in learning a CAD program, your local Community
College might have classes through Continuing Education. Learning to use a CAD
program takes a lot of time, and it can be very difficult to learn how to use
the software on your own. I've been using AutoCAD design software for more than
eight years, and I'm still learning new things! Keep with the simple stuff.

Punch 5 in 1 Home Design at Staples, about $50 bucks.

Hey, this Punch Pro is great. Had it for a day, and its really easy to use,
already created my back garden, and its pretty good for a beginner. Punch
Pro works almost exactly the same as the duke3d map editor I was talking
about, you create your property outline, then put in walls, trees, windows,
objects, change floor colour, section bits off! I'm sure I'll have fun
designing our new garden!
Cheers
Ben
