Meeting with the school team I noticed a bookshelf
full of brand new Ayn Rand books including "The
Fountainhead" and "Anthem" among others. Someone
there is either an objectivist or is using the
material to stimulate discussion and exploration.
I would have thought that just one of her books
would have been good enough for the latter purpose
so I am assuming the former, and will be vigilant.
I met four of the five teachers there and all
shrugged (not like Atlas) when I brought the books
up, so I am assuming it was the fifth teacher
who got them. The school also shares some space
with an adult night school so perhaps the books
are not owned by my boy's new school at all. Even
so I don't see what they'd have to do with ANY
publically-funded institution.
The school is designed for autodidacts not doing
well in the normal classroom so a little
individualist romantic heroism could be useful. I
will be watching to be sure that they thoroughly
debunk and discredit any objectivist or
libertarian notions that take root, of course.
In fact I may propose a weenie-roast with the
books as fuel. They do lots of environmental
education stuff at the school too. Burning books
counts as re-using and recycling, right?

No.
Burning books contributes to global warming

Nope. Not gonna touch that one either.

Either way it doesn't make you special; it just

And no doubt someone with hairy palms and thick glasses

THE KIDNAPPING OF THE PRESIDENT
1970
I meant
the kidnapping _by_ the President, of course.
He took all of us hostage, he had his bombs
in that room where he and we were together,
he had certain demands. But it was a ploy:
like us, he had read the reports, listened to
certain genuine victims' accounts of love
they grew to feel for their captors; he wanted
us to love him. Only that.
1982
Some of us were
kidnapped by our parents.--How did I mean this?
Not literally, not at first, not until
I met a child whose father gathered him up
once, into his arms, and ran: ran out of the
playground, out of the mother's sight, out of the
neighborhood. She went to court to get the boy
back. What is it like, to be so desired?
Is it like living in a room full of bombs?
1999
Later, fallen from a window, the boy died.
Later yet: much later: in fact, now, in his
windowless room, a president is holding
himself for ransom. There are many of them.
I cannot keep up with the news, history,
my birthdays. The mother gave away the boy's
undamaged organs, they were small and useful,
and I assume they persist, seventeen years
after his fall, naturalized, in bodies
that know them nearly as well as they know the
backs of their hands.

As to the question, nope. Never once wondered about Abu Garib before this

I'd imagine there was a lot less naked muslim man pyramids, less threats

Actually I see a lot more of that after Rand readings.
Well, there must be forced labour there. How else
could you get people to build Sobs and Vulvas?
Something that comes from a lingon, I'd wager.
Rubbish, they are socialism in practical realisation, as
is Canada, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, etc.
etc. etc.. Even when they have a "right wing" party it
is generally flaming socialist by comparison to either of
the American parties.
> Still, both are
>retinking all those gubberment supplied goodies .
US anti-socialists have been predicting the eventual failure
or popular decline of socialism in the democratic socialist
states ever since they began. Fortunately most of those
anti-socialists haven't been silly enough to hold their
breath waiting, but pathetically, they do hang with eager
anticipation on every drop of news that they can interpret
as the decline of socialism.
Really. Which city would that be?
Nah, Stockholm Syndrome is the opposite of "familiarity

Which had to be bailed out by GM and Ford respectively.
Haha!
Hey, today's Bloomsday!
Ned
Imagine a country with a population of less than 9 million
supporting TWO indigenous auto manufacturers for decades.
Canada never even did that, with over 32 million people
and unparalleled resource strength. Getting bought by
foreign firms (not exactly a "bailout" in the same sense
that the US government bailed out Chrysler) only means
that they allow the free market in Sweden. You are free
to attach any significance to such events as you like, of
course, but it doesn't really make your anti-socialist
case seem more realistic...it makes it seem desperate for
confirming factoids.
My all-time favoUrite Cream song. I especially liked playing it live

Sell out to Ford. Let underpaid 'merkins make 'em. Which is what they did
with Vulva. Not sure about Sobs. Prolly not since they also make military
jets.

Sure, aren't they the ones that nailed the sign with "IHOP" on it

"Whining"? Oh golly that's rich. Triumphalism feels so good
it doesn't matter if the foe is imaginary and making imaginary
sounds; just thinking he is makes it all seem real. Hit that
morphine pump one more time, baby.
The sad thing is that it's all just shadow boxing with
petrified definitions. Socialism is not a revolutionary
ideal any more so much as a modus operandi. Americans call
Canada "socialist" because we have a few more features of a
welfare state than they do, but only the nuts think there is
a short greasy playground slide between Canada's socialism
and the horror-show of Lenin and Stalin they have tattooed in
their minds. Even the USA is quite socialist in practice.
Anything short of law of the jungle dog eat dog capitalism
with rich landowners and serfs and nothing in between is too
socialist for some people, but they sound ridiculous in the
presence of the accomplished fact of socialism-in-practice
in all of the developed world. Far from being discredited
it is more popular than ever.
Die-hards who think there's some kind of capitalist vs.
socialist ideological struggle going on (or already won and
lost) are stuck in the past in old debates, and old vanities
mostly shaped by cold-war national-identity propaganda.
Fast forward to the 21st century and we find that what has
been thoroughly discredited is political and economic
ideologies -- not particular ideologies but ideological
thinking in general.
Finally, China isn't an example of the success of
capitalism; it's an example of the success of pragmatism
and non-ideological thinking. The Chinese government still
runs the Chinese economy, but through currency control and
the market rather than through micromanagement of labour.
