Upon hearing the laughter of their peers and the spectators at the
tournament, our five fearless (or is that feckless?) friends each
remembered a serious malady (one had a horrible hangnail and another
had developed a terrible rash in a most embarrassing location) that
precluded his participation in the combative contests that were to
follow. They, therefore, withdrew from the tournament, returned to
their quarters, again disarmored, dropped everything (except for their
shields) in a pile, and slunk from the city. The knights (or, I guess
ex-knights would be more appropriate) could not bear to part with
their shields, which were emblazoned with heraldic devices of great
import (one depicted a Rabbit Rampant and another a Squirrel Sinister
(a left-handed squirrel??)). The five ex-knights, are rumored to have
changed their names (all except one adopting a new name associated
with a color) and embarked upon new career paths (one became a farmer,
buying an ostrich farm in northern Scotland; one became a herdsman on
a large, Welsh rabbit ranch; and one became a tailor of exotic
apparel. In fact, the tailor planned to open a chain of shops
catering to the English cross-dresser, to be known as "Victor's
Secrets"; but, we all know what happened to that idea).
From the information provided below, identify the device depicted on
each of the ex-Pastel Knight's shield; the malady afflicting each,
which forced him to withdraw from the Grand Tournament; and the name
and career each of the knights adopted when he left the knighthood.
1. The five ex-knights are the one who changed his name to Jones (who
did not have the Mouse Supine device on his shield), the one who had a
stubbed toe, the one with a Flagged Pansy device on his shield, the
one who became a herdsman and the one who wore the yellow cuirass on
the day of the tournament.
2. One of the ex-knights, who had a flower device on his shield,
withdrew from the tournament because of his athlete's foot.
3. The ex-knight with the Drooped Daisy device on his shield changed
his name to either Black or Brown.
4. Mr Green had neither the cough nor athlete's foot.
5. The grocer (who was not Mr Brown) either had the squirrel device
on his shield or else he had the rash.
6. Either Mr Black (who had not worn the lavender helm at the
tournament) or the one who suffered from athlete's foot became a
herdsman.
7 Both the one who wore the rose cuirass on the tournament grounds
and Mr Jones began new careers that involved animals. Three of the
ex-knights (the one with the cough, Mr White and the one who wore the
lavender greaves to the tournament) took jobs in town. The ex-knight
who became a janitor withdrew from the tournament because of a
hangnail.
8. Mr White either had the hangnail or else he had the daisy device
on his shield.
9. Neither the one who wore the yellow helm at the tournament nor the
one with the cough had an animal device on his shield.
