I know, the island question was enough....what would your dream
occupation/profession would be...keep it clean! I would love to own a
bookstore/coffee house and just have really good staff and I could just hang
and read all day and talk to the customers. What would you all do??????
My second choice would be an artist, I was going to go to art school over
nursing school but my dad said I would starve to death as an artist....well,
I almost starved to death as a nurse.. Have fun...Cheryl

Want a partner? Can we include an internet cafe and a snack bar
with lots of yummy whole foods to eat?

When I was in grade school I was always in trouble. Mostly for
reading when I should be paying attention. For punishment they
sentenced me to work in the library. I loved it. Books started
filling my head with all kinds of differing and strange ideas from
the moment my mother taught me to read. I went through all of the
shelves looking at every book they had and put the lost ones back
where they belonged. It is amazing the number of misfiled books
that are in library. Maybe it is some sort obsessive disorder but
to this day I go through the shelves and find the missing books at
the library. (sorry irrelevant I know. The memories just got
triggered somehow)

What would you all do??????
> >My second choice would be an artist,

I think being an artist is more of a lifestyle and mindset than a
profession. There is room for artistic expression in almost
everything we do. If you can make money at it then it is really
great. But when money becomes the objective the expression suffers.

I was going to go to art school over
> >nursing school but my dad said I would starve to death as an artist....well,
> >I almost starved to death as a nurse..

Nurses are over worked and underpaid quite often. Those that really
care about people are very over worked and tend to burn out just
from the sheer pressure of the limitations they are placed under.
My ex-wife was one such nurse. She worked herself nearly to death
and was always unhappy that it was not enough. Never could be
enough. It was the intensity of her caring that made me love her
so. She felt the pain of all creatures great and small deep in her
heart and soul. That is just too much for one person to bear.

My first memories are the one block walk to the library. I would always
pick out novels, no children's books and my mom would gently remind me that
I had to get the Dick and Jane type books, I wanted War and Peace! I
remember the smell of a library, I love that whole atmosphere.

I agree with you. I wanted to go into commercial art, I wanted to do
layouts in magazines(I am a periodical junkie) and I think I would of really
enjoyed it, although, very competitive field.

I took every patient home in my heart and mind. It was hard. The hardest
thing I ever had to do was this, I had an 18(I think or at least 20) year
old, he had muscular dystrophy and he was dying. The only option he had was
a ventilator for the rest of his life. He chose to die that day. I had to
make all kinds of meetings, plans and then it was an eight hour ordeal of
watching him die. His dad got there 5 minutes too late and the patient was
waiting for him. I remember his mom and brother sitting there talking to
him, stroking him...he finally died by 3 pm and it was time for me to go, I
couldn't, I cried the whole time Donna and I bathed him and wrapped his
contorted body up. I will never forget that day. I have a million other
stories like it and believe me, they haunt you. Nursing is one of the most
difficult, underpaid, undernoticed profession. And to be honest, nurses eat
their young so it's no wonder they cannot move ahead with the times.
sigh....now I am melancholy!

I know the feeling. I remember in studio art class we had to paint a chair.
We were told to become the chair, feel the chair and make it into us...as if
we could feel the cool wood, or whatever your chair was in texture....it was
awesome, best thing I ever did, I always went at my art that way
afterwards....Feel it. When you feel it, become it, you can truly express
it in your work. Okay, let's open a bookstore/art studio/ coffee house with
Chris! Cheryl :o)

nup, I'll get back to you on that one.

I wouldn't mind being an artist, it might help if I was any good at
art though.

I would love to be a truely great jazz pianist, but I never liked the
practise. If I could find a way to know how to play without learning,
I would spend almost all my money on that, leaving enough to buy a
piano and whatever else I needed.

Cheryl said:

>We were told to become the chair, feel the chair and make it into us...

Painting emotionally is a tricky subject. That used to be my focus, the way
you interact with whatever you're trying to portray...but logically you must
eventually stand back and say "Come on now, it's a chair. And I'm going to
paint it."

Being someone who has worked purely from emotion I must say that it is, on
occasion, the living definition of frustration. There must be some things that
are not so heart lead. I never thought I'd hear myself say this, because last
year I was knocking heads off of the people who said it to me, but an artist
must lay a technical groundwork to ever be successful. There are some elements
that CANNOT be ignored. There are some things you must include if you wish any
audience to see your work as credible. I chased my proffessors around and
around the mountians with this topic, and in the end I came to my own
conclusion that they were right. There are rules to art.

Being taught to "feel" what you're painting can also lend itself to long
droughts on the front of creativity. This is fine for a hobbyist, but when
your belly's empty you can't wait for "inspiration" to grab hold. You have to
create your own creativity.
For instance: I got up this morning trying to think of a way to make painting
fruit interesting. I have 2 apples and a pear sitting in a bowl on a black
length of cloth in my living room waiting for me until I am finished painting
them...or until they are too rotten to be identified as edible. I do not want
to paint them. I hate painting fruit. It makes me ill to sit and look at them
because I did it for 8 HOURS today. But if anyone is ever going to look at a
painting of mine and see what is in my head, which is the only purpose for me
to create ANYTHING, I gotta learn the fruit.

Please don't take this the wrong way, Cheryl or anyone else, I'm not getting my
digs in...just talking for the sake of hearing myself spout something useful
for a change. I'm more than willing to call myself anything near an idiot on
just about any subject anyone could ever bring up, but I know whereof I speak
here. It is, as you all know, my life.

I just try not to talk about it much because I know my whole family avoids me
when I'm trying something new. I am guilty of COMPLETE overkill. My IRL
family is sick of me and my artwork, I don't want the same thing to happen with
you bunch of folks.

> When you feel it, become it, you can truly express
>it in your work.

I agree. But sometimes I don't feel like a goddam piece of fruit (mostly
today). Sometimes I want to throw that fruit out the window and it's 150
shades of green with it. But then I say..."damn you, you stupid pear, you will
not beat me. And I'll sit in this goddam chair all freaking night until I
paint you."

Kitzy,
I am going to say this. Every profession or job has it's nuances. It has
it's rules. Nursing, for example, since I know it so well....is an art and
a science. Some days you take absolute joy and pride in your work, I walk
in the patient's room with a smile, I administer my treatments and meds with
expertise, I psychologically assess their moods or need and drive home
knowing I did my absolute best and enjoyed it. Some days you hate the
patients, the family members are from hell and you have 16 treatments to do,
59 meds to give out and a sore back. Now within those two examples are
rules, procedure, policy, etc. Just like art. You think you are individual
in this feeling, you are not, we hate patients when you hate a pear, we
reach out and touch a patient when you get into your piece of art. It's all
the relative. You may be the expert in art, it's nuances, it's subtle
changes and paradigms however, there are laws and rules in all we do... in
all we work for. Okay, you stand back and say, ah fuck, it's a chair, I
just going to paint it...I say, ah fuck, another myocardial infarction is
happening, let me do A.give oxygen. B. give nitro per standing orders, C.
always call the doc first and do an ekg fiist. D. Get the patient's ass out
of the crisis. Some days I hold the patient's hand and say, Mr so and so,
you are having pain as you told me, it's going to be alright, I am here for
you and this is what I am going to do to help you.....blahteedy blah blah.
Where when you are just going to paint the damn chair sometimes I just say,
hey, Mr soandso, take this nitro NOW! Passion comes in spurts, we are not
always passionate and creative and compassionate....sometimes you gotta get
the fucking job done. Kitz, I know where you are coming from, been there
done that, that is why I love you so much, kiddo, you are so full of life
and interesting....I didn't take your post in a bad way, I just want you to
understand that I understand passion in artwork. I also have had days in my
art classes I sat and read a magazine. The teacher(Denise, remember Mr
Wood?) told me, Cheryl, you are never going to make it reading a magazine.
I told him the spirit hasn't moved me yet...when it did, I would let him
know. And when it did, I got an A on my project. Passion comes in cycles
and spurts, sometimes I threw a shit piece together and got a damn C. I
know the difference. Cheryl

What I know is that I enjoy a relationship with a person I know very
well much more than a relationship with one I do not. I have never
run out of room for growth and exploration yet in a relationship.
But then I am young and the longest one I have had was only ten
years in duration.

I tend to hold people at arms length because I'm scared of being hurt. That's
why STRs are better for me sometimes, people can believe whatever the heck they
want to and I don't feel obligated to care or feel hurt if they leave. I don't
want to be alone, but I make myself that way so that I don't risk feeling
abandoned someday (which is worse?).

I'm just sick of caring for people who are made of stone. If I could find a
person who I knew wouldn't turn tail after a while...

I think Darth Vader would have been more fun if he'd been collecting funny
bumper stickers and sticking them to things around the Death Star. Or
something. The poor guy had no hobbies. It was just work, work, work, force,
force, force, blowin up rebels and dark gloomy throne rooms all the time. He
should have collected Hawaiian Shirts. How could anyone be grumpy when they
knew they had a collection of floral prints at home in their closet?

I think we should have a Darth Vader Hawaiian Shirt Fund.

It never did. Though American cinema has taught me that any bad guy wanting to
take over the world by necessity has to be English. I've never worked out why,
but it's better than the old stereotype of the lovable Cockney geezer.

That was a quote from Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail, after
the song, The Nights of the Round Table, Arthur says: 'On second
thoughts let's not go to Camelot - 'tis a silly place'

I always call people bub. It's like a cross between buddy and...something that
ends in "ub". It's a pretty common word over here. It's like saying "mate"
over there.

I have trouble singing other people's material...and by that I mean well known
musicians...because I feel like everyone compares you to them. And as a result
the nervousness is raised to the nth degree.

but it's great when you do a really good rendition and everyone knows it too
All of our band's stuff is someone elses, but we do our own versions, and
some how it works and they pay us to do it to, although I'd do it for
nothing aswell, just can't beat that buzz
