Hello

This question is probably old hat here, but not in alt.horror.cthulhu.

We are engaged in a discussion of how to read A Night in the Lonesome
October. Is there any word about whether Mr. Zelazny actually wanted
his book read a chapter each night, or never even gave it a thought?

Thanks in advance

Matt

A chapter a night, but only in years when the phases of the moon are
incorrect.

If there is a full moon on All Hallow's Eve, then it is time for action!

I've gone through a lot of Zelazny's archived correspondence and many
interviews, and I didn't encounter a single instance where he stated
any wishes about how this novel should be read. The book appeared in
August 1993 and he died less than two years later, so there is only
very limited archived material that describes his thoughts about this
novel. Of course I can't rule out that he made some comment in an
unrecorded GOH speech or other conversation. But my gut feeling is
that he didn't give any thought as to how the book should be read. It
wouldn't have fit with other comments he'd made about his writing
where, for example, he would remark that he wanted the stories just
read and enjoyed as stories, and he didn't care if the reader failed
to appreciate any of the allusions or additional layers of meaning in
the work.

For the purist wanting to re-read the novel in a year in which the
full moon falls on Halloween, the next occurrence will be in 2020.

As for me, I like to listen to them. I have the cassettes of Mr
Zelazny reading them and have them on MP3 as well. About this time, I
put the CD in my cars MP3 player and give it a good listen.
