Long Life Now: Strategies for Staying Alive
Lee Hitchcox
Celestial Arts
PO Box 7123, Berkeley, CA 94707
0-89087-763-7 $15.95 1-800-841-2665

There are places on the planet where people live beyond age 100 free of
disease. America is not one of them. Cancer will soon become America's
leading cause of death while nursing homes and cardiac surgeons thrive.
Long Life Now shows how to slow the biological aging process, apply the
principles of extreme longevity to anyone's personal lifestyle, achieve
immunity form nursing home institutionalization, cut the risk of
degenerative disease, purge pesticides from our personal food supply and
environment, convert our economy from petrochemical-based to plant-based,
and transform government from lobby-centered to people-centered. Long Life
Now also surveys medical junk science, government corruption, industry
coverups, and informs us what we can do about them. Long Life Now stands
as the most ambitious book to date on life extension through personal
action and social reform. Long Life Now is inspiring, practical,
easy-to-read, and a valuable addition to any personal, school, or
community library collection.

A New Covenant With Nature
Richard Heinberg
Quest Books/Theosophical Publishing House
PO Box 270, Wheaton, IL 60189
0-8356-0746-1 $20.00 1-800-462-6420

A New Covenant With Nature addresses such vital questions as "Has modern
civilization really improved human life?"; "Is money evil?"; "Is
government necessary?"; and "What can we each do to renew our connection
with all that is wild, generative, and free?". Ecophilosopher Richard
Heinberg"s A New Covenant With Nature is a radical and thought-provoking
book providing perception and refreshing insight with wit, insight, and
well articulated observations. Each culture, Heinberg shows, makes a
covenant or agreement with nature. Our culture's agreement is obviously
crumbling. If we are to create a new covenant, we must begin by rethinking
the gives of society from the ground up, or even, quietly, desert the
existing social system and help birth a better. one. A New Covenant With
Nature is fascinating, thoughtful, and thought-provoking reading. A "must"
for anyone concerned with the problems of the impact on ecology by 20th
century industrial, cultural, and political values.

Tailwater Trout in the South: An Angler's Guide
Jimmy Jacobs
Backcountry Publications
PO Box 748, Woodstock, VT 05091-0748
0-88150-335-5 $18.00 1-800-233-4830 http://web.wwnorton.com

Tailwater Trout In The South speaks to all styles of anglers:
bait-fishers, spin-fishers, and especially fly-fishers. Introductory
comments explain the differences anglers should expect when venturing into
and onto these open and often deep waters. Fly-casters who are used to
tickling a cast through streamside brush with a short rod in the mountains
may find it liberating to cast in these wide open spaces, but they will
need heavier equipment for the windier conditions and deeper water -- and
for the bigger fish. Many tailwater fish have an abundant food supply, and
so are relatively picky eaters; Jimmy Jacobs provides hints on how to tune
one's lure to the conditions. Clear maps and instructions direct readers
to public access points. What to expect of each site is outlined:
variation in water flows, quantities of stocked and holdover fish,
suggestions for successful lures and techniques, pressure of fishing
population on the resource. An appendix lists map sources for more
detailed information about specific waters. Tailwater Trout In The South
is a well crafted fisherman's guidebook and a perfect addition to any
angler's reference shelf.

A Rebel's Recollections
George Cary Eggleston
Louisiana State University Press
Baton Rouge, LA 70803
0-8071-2125-8 $10.95 1-800-861-3477

Originally published in 1875, George Cary Eggleston's memoir (which proved
immensely popular among readers throughout the country) is a nostalgic,
often amusing collection of essays based on the author's Civil War
experiences. Eggleston describes life in Virginia before the war, offers
glowing assessments of the men who filled the Rebel ranks and the women
who stood behind them, satirizes the Confederacy's finances and its army's
red tape, and recollects the war's end. He also provide compelling
portraits of his heroes, lavishing praise on Robert E. Lee, Stonewall
Jackson, and especially, Jeb Stuart. By 1905, A Rebel's Recollections had
run through four editions, suggesting how well it reflected the mood of
the nation, which by then wanted to forget angry sectionalism and glorify
the soldiers of both sides in an idealized view of the war. Having been
long out of print, Gaines M. Foster now provides a new introduction,
deftly placing Eggleston's memoir in the context of recent historiography.
A Rebel's Recollections is an engaging, informative and entertaining book
that all students of the Civil War will want to read.

German-Jewish Identity in the Orientalist Literature of Else
Lasker-Schuler, Friedrich Wolf & Franz Werfel
Donna K. Heizer
Camden House, Inc.
Drawer 2025, Columbia, SC 29202
1-57113-025-X $54.95 1-800-723-9455

One of only a handful of studies on German literary Orientalism, Professor
Heizer's pioneering book is the first to examine the phenomenon of
Jewish-German Orientalist literature. For many Jewish-German authors of
the beginning of the 20th century, the Orient represented an imaginative
space where they could describe and analyze their position as Jews in
German society. Professor Heizer explores representations of Muslims and
Islamicate cultures in the works of Lasker-Schuler, Wolf, and Werfel, and
reveals how these popular and respected authors (who were nevertheless
often seen as Jewish, Oriental "others" by the German-speaking societies
in which they lived) came to terms with their multiple identities as
Germans and Jews by writing Orientalist literature. Despite their
similarities as German-Jewish authors rooted in Expressionism,
Lasker-Schuler, Wolf, and Werfel constructed quite different images of the
Orient in their works. Lasker-Schuler's Die Nachte Tino von Bagdads
(1097) and Der Prinz von Theben (1912) creates a timeless, amorphous
Orient, filled with visionary artists like herself; it serves as the
vehicle with which she explores her role as a Jewish artists in a German
Society. Wolf's Mohammed: Ein Oratorium (1922 depicts the Orient as the
birthplace of the great message of social justice espoused by Islam; here
Wolf reaches a new understanding of his position as a politically
progressive Jew in a war-torn German society. And in Werfel's Die vierzig
Tage des Musa Dagh (1933) the author uses the modern conflict between
Turks and Armenians to present an Orient where he can explore his own
religiosity. German-Jewish Identity In The Orientalist Literature Of Else
Lasker-schuler, Friedrich Wolf & Franz Werfel is a seminal contribution to
our understanding of an important facet of 20th century German literature.

The Islamic Middle East: An Historical Anthropology
Charles Lindholm
Blackwell Publishers
PO Box 30, Williston, VT 05495-0030
1-55786-421-7 $24.95 1-800-216-2522

The Islamic Middle East: An Historical Anthropology is an account of the
origins, nature, and evolution of Islam. It is also an exploration of the
cultures of the middle East where Islam originated fourteen centuries ago,
and of the Arab, Persian and Turkish societies where it remains a powerful
force. Islam and the cultures in which it arose are inseparably linked,
and, as author Charles Lindholm shows, need to be understood in the
context of each other. This outstanding synthesis of historical and
anthropological perspectives provides a fresh understanding of the nature
of Islam and of the Middle East in the past and in the present. It is
written with verve and wit, and illustrated with maps, figures and 18th and
19th century lithographs. The Islamic Middle East is fully referenced,
indexed, and includes a glossary and comparative time line. The Islamic
Middle East is an invaluable and highly recommended introduction for
anyone seeking to understand the impact of Islam on the political, social,
economic, and cultural issues of the mideast today.

Scams, Scandals, and Skulduggery
Andreas Schroeder
McClelland & Stewart
481 University Avenue, Suite 900, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M5G 2E9
0-7710-7952-4 $19.99 1-416-598-1114

Scams, Scandals, And Skulduggery presents seventeen tales of the world's
most outrageous frauds. These stories range from the past (such as the
master forger and the Brazilian aristocrat who sold six copies of the Mona
Lisa to wealthy and dishonest collectors -- and then had to steal the
original painting to maintain the fiction) to the present, such as the
famous case of the forged Hitler diaries. Many of the "heroes" break the
law, such as Albert Spaggieri, who, in 1976, stole a fortune from a bank
in Nice, feeding his gang with take-out pastries from one of the city's
finest restaurants, and then escaping through the sewers, and some don't
break the law, such as the Irish Lawyer who, in the 1930s patented
trademark names like Kellogg's, General Electric, Goodyear, and Dupont in
his own name, and then raked in millions when the companies had to rent
back their own names from him to do business in Ireland. These tales of
outrageous chicanery command a kind of admiration for their sheer
ingenuity and daring, and Schroeder's wicked, deadpan style of narrative
makes Scams, Scandals, And Skulduggery fascinating, funny reading. Scams,
Scandals, And Skulduggery is the stuff of which urban legends are made!

The Women of Candelaria
Mary Richardson Miller
Pomegranate Publications
Box 6099, Rohnert Park, CA 94927
0-7649-0005-6 $31.95 1-800-227-1428

The Women of Candelaria is a book of pictorial evidence for a strength and
dignity that are a testament to the power of an active faith, vital
community life, and rich traditions as it tells the personal stories of
descendants of the ancient Maya in a Guatemalan village of 65 families set
in a land of wide vistas, rolling hills, steep canyons, oak and pine
forests. There are stories punctuated by the tragedies of war, earthquake,
and privation, but also by the warmth of large, supportive families, by
the generosity of their community and the richness of their religious
celebrations. It pictures them surrounded by the things they hold most
dear: their children, a special flower garden, a prized farm animal. This
is a beautiful addition to any library shelf.

Enrico Donati: Surrealism and Beyond
Theodore F. Wolff
Hudson Hills Press
230 Fifth Avenue, Suite 1308, NY, NY 10001-7704
1-55595-138-4 $50.00 1-212-889-30900

Theodore Wolff's Enrico Donati: Surrealism And Beyond is a retrospective
survey of visually stunning and profoundly moving works of paint and
sculpture by a true master. Enrico Donati: Surrealism And Beyond includes
such icons of Surrealism as his bronze "Fist" with glass eyes that turn a
hand into an eerie face, and the catalogue with a glued-on foam-rubber
breast created in collaboration with Duchamp for the 1947 Exposition
Internationale due Surrealisme they organized at the Galerie Maeght in
Paris, which would prove to the the movement's last big public event.
Donati's Surrealist paintings, filled with biomorphic forms in an
illusionary space, were followed in the late 1940s by paintings filled
with crisp, clear, aggressively geometric forms and planes, a fanciful
mechanical world. These were succeeded in turn by gestural paintings that
utilize a freely invented calligraphic approach. In 1950 Donati began a
series using pigment and glue thickened with vacuum-cleaner lint, their
heavy black, gray and white surfaces suggestive of lunar landscapes. Color
returned to Donati's work in the Sargon series of the mid-fifties, then
came an ancient-looking Fossil series in the early 1960s, and a Coptic
Wall series in the late 1970s. Donati's most recent work has seen a
gradual enlivening and the incorporation of updated images from the
earlier work in often playful geometric structures and ambiguous spaces.
At the age of 87, Donati is still at work with passion and imagination on
paintings that are highly provocative, richly textured, and ravishingly
colorful. Enrico Donati: Surrealism And Beyond is also graced with an
insightful and informative monographic essay by Theodore Wolff, "Enrico
Donatie: The Fossil and the Stone". With its 87 colorplates and 28 black
and white illustrations, Enrico Donati: Surrealism And Beyond is a highly
recommended addition to all library art history collections.

Impressionist Masterpieces in American Museums
Robert Boardingham
Hugh Lauter Levin Associates Inc.
2507 Post Road, Southport, CT 06490
0-88363-156-3 $35.00 1-203-254-7733

In 1874, a group of painters, frustrated by their rejection from the
official Paris Salon exhibitions, banded together to show their works
independently. Drawing upon subjects from modern life, without ennobling
them, and by painting them in a manner that appeared direct and
spontaneous, these innovative artists (including Claude Monet, Eugene
Boudin, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir,
Camille Pissaro, and Alfred Sisley) pointedly challenged official art and
ultimately changed traditional conventions and standard expectations of
painting itself. The stunning images offered in Impressionist Masterpieces
In American Museums provide visual reinforcement for the continued
popularity of French Impressionist painting. Together they show the
quality, scope, and magnificence of Impressionist Masterpieces In American
Museums including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Metropolitan
Museum in New York, Washington's National Gallery, and the Art Institute
of Chicago, and many others. The 48 full-color illustrations in
Impressionist Masterpieces In American Museums vividly exemplify the
diversity and richness of Impressionist painting from the late 1860s
through the beginning of the twentieth century. An introductory essay and
insightful commentary accompany each of the 48 color plates exploring the
historic and artistic roots of a revolutionary art movement. Impressionist
Masterpieces In American Museums is an astonishing tour-de-force that
would grace any private or public art book library.

In Florida Scams, Victor Knight has compiled a set of his "Granddaddy's
Rules" that can help a person see through the "smooth-talking jaspers" who
over the years have taken advantage of Florida's loophole-laden tax laws
and laissez-faire attitudes and bamboozled victims out of billions of
dollars. Witty, informal, and sprinkled with down-home Florida vernacular,
Knight's tales of the shady characters and scam artists are as informative
as they are entertaining. Knight also explains how Boca Raton is a city
based on the scam (like Treasure Island) whose very name comes from the
confidence game that put it on the map. Highly recommended!
