I'm not going to post a review, but I read THE COLOR OF WATER and it is
wonderful. The author is James McBride who is also a fierce
musician/composer. It's the story of his mother who is Jewish, was
rejected by her father, moved to NYC to live with relatives, fell in love
with a black man, married him, was widowed, married again, widowed again,
became a single parent to 7 or so children and the rest continues in a
book I couldn't put down. The story is told in two voices, the author's
and the author's mother. Sanford/Pilsbury (producers of "How to Make an
American Quilt") have already bought the television rights for an HBO
project.
THE COLOR OF WATER is an insightful and moving tribute to a mother from
her son. It's currently in hardcover. I believe an excerpt was printed
in either the May or June, 1996 issue of "Essence" magazine.

I am going to look for this book on my next trip to the library. Sounds similar to one I'm reading now ... "Beach Music" by
Pat Conroy .... excellent !!!
