proclaimed "Eureka!" when he stepped into a bath and noticed that the
water level rose he suddenly understood that the volume of water
displaced must be equal to the volume of the part of his body he had
submerged.
As a young student I took notice that r Archimedes was the first
English speaking Greek. My text book said Archimedes cried out
“Eureka, Eureka. I have found it I have found it” The Master Mr
Manson Welch was not amused by my astute observation,,

Even more astounding is the fact that on Stargate SG-1, all the
people on the various planets that the team explores, seems to
speak English... Not a Frenchman or Spaniard in the lot.....
I guess Captain Cook went more places that previously thought.....

USA that is one place that does not speak English

I agree. We have so many very large ethnic groups and cultures
in the US that in many places they just bond and live together, with
no reason to learn any form of English.
In Dallas alone, which isn't even one of our largest cities,
there
are 700,000 Hispanics, many of which occupy a section of the
city that is like "little Mexico". ( Note that google says there are
only 117,000 in the entire UK, mostly Colombian, which I can
assume are there legally and speak English -- no so here)... So the
US has
a unique position in taking in so many of other cultures. It is
estimated
that well over 1000 a day are smuggled in over our southern border,
nearly all uneducated, non English speaking.
The ghetto slang of black Americans is pretty undecipheral to
me, and it uses English words, and a bunch of new made-up ones.
I am not aware of any black ghettos in my part of the state, but I
admit that I haven't sought them out.
If you are travelling in the Southern US, you will find a little
Spanish to be helpful. It may save you a few bucks by
avoiding the "gringo tax", in which products printed in spanish
are sometimes cheaper than the identical product printed
in English. That is even more apparent in Mexico.
And,of course, there are our Moslem communities. I don't know
much of them, since in Texas, the middle easterners seem to be
dispersed among the population. I suppose that means that there
aren't as many of that group as in the north, but I haven't any
interest in
researching tha issue.
By the way, in Texas, white non-Hispanics is the minority ethnic
group. A bit of trivia that many don't realize....... If a white non-
H has
personal prejudices, they won't like Texas much... :>)))))
