I EXIST BECAUSE I WANT TO BECOME

a short story by

M. Michael Musatov

Lola

Lola kneels in a dark open closet and prays to God. Her face reflects
her internal whisper as she concentrates the willof her message to the
throne of the Eternal God. She pleads, "Lord please stay with me in
this contest. Bless what I say and how I present it and help me prove
to skeptics you create heaven and earth. Please guide my search and
show your greatness. I ask all of this in the name of your Son Jesus.
Amen."

Michael

Michael holds the hotel phone to his ear. His stubbled face reddens.
His lips burst, "John, what do you mean a proof God exists?” Michael
lays back on the bed to hiss, "Get me a copy of the paper and help me
disprove it! Bring it to the hotel bar, I'll see you!" Michael slams
the phone and grabs his jacket. In the elevator he talks to himself,
"Computer program proves God exists, and God is UNIX-based!" The
luxury hotel lobby opens to a rotunda.

Aftermath

Michael wins the debate. Lola presents a fine case and scores 3
decisions out of 7 judges. She presents proof the scientific method
coupled with statistical analysis has revealed the scion of creation
manifest in elaborate codeset in the Old Testament Bible. These
recently unmasked data structures contain facts, events and even
people hundreds and thousands of years beyond the publication of their
manuscripts. As the First of several books in the Old Testament with
these newly discovered ‘Old Testament Codes’ provides necessary sound
proof God exists, so then God has created the heavens and earth as
written in chapters 1 and 2 of the Book of Genesis.

Michael is keen and sharp. Though the paper Lola references appears in
the September, 2011 Journal of Applied Statistics, Michael passions
argument how statistics prove anything, and paints a longview of the
fossil record some 4 billion years, sufficient to convince 4 of 7
judges Darwin has more science and proof than the ‘Ararat anomoly’,
and given the sheer number of books there are written, and the massive
amounts of information in human history; the vain coupling of broad
rhumination and repetition of word and subject-matter by verse,
derives wash from any text. Further so, too, to draw a conclusion on a
matter of such sweeping magnitude based on only the first five books
of the Bible is simple non sequitur.

Michael's dilemma is the ego. He hungers for a far greater profundity
in his victories. He must prove the basic fallacy of Lola’s proof; he
must find the fatal flaw in the paper written by Witsomme and Werdick.

Hooters

Michael peels the paper label off a bottle of beer to think. John
registers it, "Did you see the waitress?” Michael shakes his head, "If
I knew Hebrew it would be easy to show Witsomme and Werdick make the
data proof out bias. They lack proper controls."

John asks him the simplest thing, “Why go to Hooters, if you don’t
look?" Andtthen in disgust, "So we’re back on this again? Why not let
it be? You won the debate."

Michael leans in glint and square-jawed, "She has three votes, a
single vote separated us! Until I prove the fatal flaw, and then the
whole argument is mine!"

John only exasperates Michael by his continuous queries, "Oh, yeah,
how are you going to find what you don’t even know you’re looking for,
other than what you want it to do for you?"

Michael slacks a grin, "I'll go to India. There is a mathematician, a
logician, who tells me how to do it, how to prove the Torah is trash!
He just needs a little help, from me."

The Master

This vision comes to him as he meditates in the evening. He sees an
unshaven man ride a donkey carrying a candle. When the vision is past
he rises and sketches what he sees in the dream. He can see clearly in
the mind, details of the vision. He draws an skilled picture of this
white American man on a donkey. He details his dormant dimples subtle
upon his cheeks. He colors and shades an hour, anartistic image of
distinct shade, black and grey the face of one who requires rest, one
who needs a shave, and rides on the back of an ass. This man to sketch
carries a candle. The flame lights up his face in the dark. After he
completes the drawing, true to his vision as he may manage, he then
draws a fast sketch of the man's face, because it is time to prepare
for a visitor long time coming.
