I am reading Chapter 3 of Orwell's Down and Out, and he makes references to surviving on "six francs a day." He also talks about milk costing about 80 cents. Anyway, I've tried to do some rough calculations on what that (six francs) would actually be worth in today's dollars, but am having difficulty.
Does anyone have a solid explanation (with references to currency exchange rates for 1933) of what six francs is (roughly) equivalent to?
