I can see a several of possibilities -
1. SLN and RMN go to war. As a result Manticore sign peace treaty with Haven
and thats them out of the story for a while at least until Mesa get s around
to attacking them.
2. Manticore does a quick 'threaten' run on Have with a handful of Apollo
ships. Force a peace treaty and at the same time send a few Apollo ships to
Earth or where ever the SLN main govt is. Threatening them before they even
know they are at war. Very risky and unlikely I admit but possible.
3. Manty and Haven discover some interesting info through Torch of Freedom,
sign peace treaty and become 'friends' to the extent that RMN shares some of
the good tech. They rebuild their combined fleets and then go kick the crap
out of everyone else, Mesa, SLN anyone else who looks at them odd for good
measure. :)
Any info would be appreciated.

I do not hang out at Baen web site, but both "Storm from the Shadows"
and "Torch of Freedom" have some indications of what is to come:
[If you have not read these two books, be forwarned that there
are spoilers below:]
At the end of Storm from the Shadows, Mesa has launched a stealth attack
on Manticore. I suspect that the attack will be on the Maniticore ship
yards.
At the end of Torch of Freedom, Victor Cachet and Anton Zilwiki have:
1) A traitor from Mesa who understands the new space ship drive.
2) Rock solid evidence that Mesa participated in the assassination
of Yves Grosclaude. They almost certainly know that Jean-Claude
Nesbttt was the person that arranged for the assassination.
3) At the end of the book, the good guys are stranded for several
months waiting for their damaged space drive to be repaired.
I suspect that Victor and Anton will not show up in time to prevent
the Mesa sneak attack. (David Weber loves to have Manitcore have
the smaller fleet.) However, Victor and Anton will show up in time
to finger Mesa and hand over the secret of the new and improved space
drive.
Victor will be able to give Eloise Pritchart the "smoking gun"
she needs to to prove that Arnold Giancola fabricated the
Manticore/Haven diplomatic correspondence. This will allow her
to convince the Senate that it was all a big mistake.
--------------
My theory is that Honor Harrington will play a central role in
helping to get Elizabeth Winton and Eloise Prichart to sign a
peace treaty, just in time to have to go to war with Mesa and/or
the Solarian League.
Whatever happens, it should be fun.

I think Torch of Freedom gave Manticore enough to figure out the war
is fake. This should lead to peace between them and they'll both turn
on Mesa.
<snip>
Hi thanks for the input. My copy of Torch has still not turned up (damned
Amazon :( ) Anyway my account says it's been posted now so I'll read it
soon. Sounds good from what you are telling me though.
I just really hope Manticore has got at least some of it's new wallers out
the yard before they get hit. Otherwise they are gonna be in pooh street
when it comes to the Sollies !
Oh well fun shall be had I'm sure.
Cheers
Neil
I can see it going two ways. First, the attack agianst Manitcore gets
spotted, possibly by a Havinite POW helping with clean up, thus moving
them into a slightly better oder. The other way, is the attack goes
home and suddenly the only large scale shipyard in the area belongs to
Haven, forcing a peace treaty.
On what terms? Haven patriots (and there are many) will want a
Just Peace, which at the minimum includes compensation. And Elizabeth
Windsor knows that every bad thing - from crop failures, to bad golf
scores, is a result of Haven, one way or another. She's not going to
be easy to convince. The destruction of Her Shipyards is just another
sneak attack by Haven.
Remember, what _evidence_ does ONI, the SKM equivalent of the CIA,
etc, have of Mesa's active role? Aside form the suspicions of a Haven
Secret Agent, and a cashiered Manticorian intelligence operative,
nothing that the reader knows is necessarily known by Manticore.

Just about the time you finally see light at the end of the tunnel,
you find out it's a Government Project to build more tunnel.
Disagree. I believe she will be willing to listen when she learns the
whole thing was a setup.
Pyotr should read _Storm From The Shadows_. Toward the end, Honor gives QE
a 'good talking' and QE is willing to discuss the matter with Haven.

Okay, Yet another book to add to the list.

One of the things that Zilwicki is bringing back from Mesa is evidence
that Mesa was behind the Webster assassination, and it was plainly
stated that with that as a starting point, ONI would be able to dig up
lots of corroborating evidence of their own on Earth.

While other people have brought out some good points as to why she
might listen. You also need to consider that if Haven had the
capablity to this kind of attack, why did they bother with the Battle
of Manticore at all? They could have just done this and with all of
it's shipyards destroyed they would have had no way to continue the
war anyway.
Plus if any of the hardware is left after the attack, it should be
relativly easy to prove that it was Sollie, not Havenite manufactre.
Add in, that by the nature of the attack there are going to be
planitary strikes you have a violation of the Eridani Edict. Not
something a starkingdom is going to do lightly.

Another one for your list is Torch of Freedom if you haven't already read
it.
SPOILER ALERT
At the end of that book Anton and Victor bring back some fairly convincing
evidence as in Herlander and also the data chip from Jack McBryde that
details in a limited way how the assassination technique works. Herlanders
the guy who is gonna help the Manties / Haven with the new Streak Drive.
All in all I think it's going to be a lot of fun - if painful for a while,
which DW says at the beginning of Storm from the Shadows, for the Manties.
I'm sure they'll get over it as they have some of their new SD(P)'s working
up already (Torch). I just hope they get a lot more out of the yards before
they get blown to bits. Knowing DW though that' not very likely, I just hope
the Manties have enough :)

Okay, I did not know. I'm apparently two books behind.
That, in and of itself, is not prima facie evidence. Tech
transfers (black market or legit) could lead to black ops or false
flag ops, there are lots of reasons why Haven might use Sollie tech.
Remember those stealth drones which took out Her Majesties government.
I'd personally love to see option 3. I've grown very fond of various
Haven characters, especially Theisman and Usher, and it would be
interesting to see if/how they could team up with Harrington and her
cadre to take on a new Big Bad. And Mesa/Manpower does look like a
fairly worthy Big Bad.
When I start actually wanting the 'bad' guys (Haven) to beat the
'good' guys (Manticore), it's time for a change :-)
I'm sorry no one picked up on this. I did read the other posts on the
thread. Who gets the drive guy? These two star nations are at war and they
aren't going to want to share the new drive tech. Maybe he stays at Verdent
Vesta?
I think the tech will be shared - remember that you have an unofficial
joint effort in getting that information away from Mesa.
In response to the first poster, I'd lean towards a variation of #3. I
think we also have to factor Beowulf into the equation, there was a
strong hint of that in Torch of Freedom. Beowulf has been portrayed
up until this point as mostly interested in genetic science with
political influence in the League. What I came away with from the
book is that Beowulf is actually a major power in its own right. It
hasn't been showing that power, but it's there - and now they have a
real reason to start flexing their muscles.
Beowulf is a major player in the League and a tech leader. We still don't
know just how strong it really is.

I think this is a good indicator of where it might be going:
----------------------------------------------
"I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, Brice. It's going to be a while
yetthere are some other people we have to talk to first, for several
reasonsbut unless I miss my guess, you're going to see the rage of
Beowulf unleashed in the universe sometime pretty damned soon now.
They're not going to quibble over the cost of an extra prolong
treatment while they're sinking a fortune into forging the weapons to
finally take down Grendel. Which they surely will, once they learn the
monster has a mother after all."
----------------------------------------
From this, as well as the information that Beowulf has had unofficial
strike teams out, I came away with the impression that Beowulf is far
more than it's previous portrayals.
The Starkingdom and the republic would both refuse to share the data.
However, the two people on the scene are Anton and Victor. They do
share. To prevent only one side from getting the data to build the
new drive, they would sensibly keep the hyperphysicist on Torch, where
each star nation can have free access to him, and ensure that each
star nation's R&D establishment get full data. That keep the playing
field level.
