Don't think it has been said anywhere explicitly yet. Personally I think it
is a metaphorical item, in that once the armies have started marching they
won't be stood down until Charis has been destroyed.

Just my thinking anyway.

And the "key"

The key is another matter and unfortunately we lack enough info to know for
sure what it unlocks.

The fact that Wilson said it was with the priest in Charis (forgot his name)
then I think it's something to do with that Truth Crystal (well that's a
guess but it does me for now). I reckon it unlocks the control to the
weapons platform in space. The one the 'Angels' used to create Armageddon
Bay and wipe out Shan-Wei. It almost has to when Wilson describes it as a
defence against the Churches Enemies.

Well, I reckon that it wakens somebody in cold sleep in the Temple but we
don't have enough info to say. Of course, knowing David Weber both of us
could be wrong.

Knowing DW it's probably a key to reactivate a Dalek ;-)

Just after the /Off Armageddon Reef/ came out, I mentioned this
'angel-on-ice-in-the-Temple-basement' speculation to David.

His response was his patented 'tum-te-tum-tum...'

He has also said that the weapons in Nimue's Cave are there for a reason.
IIRC he implied that they would be used.
