Of course Cayleb would know what happened but how would they explain
the baby conceived when he wasn't there???
As David replied when this came up on the Bar about a month ago:
"First, as to the pregnancy issue. Of course everyone involved was
aware of the dangers that a pregnancy on Sharleyan's part would
represent. What I didn't really feel was necessary to point out was
that there are all sorts of acts of physical intimacy which literally
cannot result in pregnancy. In fact, there is only one type or act of
physical intimacy (albeit with many potential variations on the theme)
which can result in pregnancy. If no sperm is deposited in the
vicinity of an ovum, fertilization cannot occur, and, yes, Cayleb and
Sharleyan were smart enough to know how that worked (and sufficiently
youthful and open to experimentation to work around the problem). I
suppose that I could have had Merlin point out to the amorous couple
that they should take precautions, but unlike certain of my readers,
Merlin assumed they were smart enough to figure that out on their own.

Young couple in love--I can certainly see them overlooking this.
I could see them being aware of it, but if they could hold out long
enough to hear Merlin tell his story to Sharylynn, they had enough
time not jumping each others' bones not to get her knocked up. Using
a minimal amount of imagination and there is plenty of things that
horny, attractive people who are into each other can do that relieves
the horny part of the equation without the risk of unintentional
pregnancy.
Yeah, they could avoid it. Merlin certainly should have said
something about it, though. Normally pregnancy would have been
desired, they certainly haven't been avoiding it in the past.

both of them are far above the curve so it's not much of a reach to not have
to cover the obvious with them.
