BMX Bikers On Track With Cash Grant

BMX bikers in Redditch were today celebrating after
scooping a cash grant towards their Olympic dream.
Stunt riders from Redditch BMX club were handed £1,000
from the O2 It's Your Community Award to do up their new
Icknield Street BMX course that is set to attract the world's
top bikers as they prepare for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
With the support of double world champion Scott Beaumont, the
club is aiming to put itself firmly on the BMX map with an extra
£227,000 being ploughed into the park by Redditch Borough Council.
And with an additional £1,000 Scott and his team are set to put their
volunteers through their paces in a bid to get them recognised as
qualified coaches.
Mr Beaumont said: "BMX is a great sport which appeals to all ages.
"It is very family orientated as parents introduce their
kids or kids introduce their parents to the sport."
The award came after Redditch MP Jacqui Smith nominated the
group of professional athletes when she was made aware of their
bid to give young people in the town something to do outside of
school.
Ms Smith said: "It is a common complaint that there is not enough for
young people to do but the BMX track, which will fit in perfectly with
the
existing skate park, will provide local youngsters with active and
healthy
activities to get involved in.
"While the local council has been able to support the infrastructure it
is
important that we ensure that as many people as possible can use these
facilities and that's why awards such as this are so important."
Set to open in the summer the combined BMX and skate park is
expected to see 7,500 young people pass through it's gates in
the first year.
O2's Steve Bartholomew added: "I'm delighted
It's Your Community has been able to get involved.
"The awards are designed to make a
difference to communities all over the UK."
