*** City To Tear Down - BMX Track ***

Albuquerque, NM -- 05/07/2009
City council takes up tearing down BMX track.

The Albuquerque city council is one step closer to tearing
down and moving a BMX track near Isotopes Park.

At Monday night's city council meeting, councilors approved
a bill sponsored by Isaac Benton that calls for city developers
to look into how much it would cost to demolish and move the
BMX track back to its original planned location.

"It's the city's mistake and, unfortunately, the
city is going to have to pay for it," Benton said.

Since 2003, the city and state have invested close to $6 million
into building and developing the track. Recently, the city has
added bathrooms and administrative offices.

City officials say it would cost up to $6 million to tear
it down and move it 500-feet closer to Isotopes Park.

But Benton says it would cost much less.

"It won't be anywhere approaching the $5 million that's been
spent there. A lot of the construction that's been spent there
has been with concession buildings, parking lots and so forth
that don't have to move," Benton said.

The money to move the park would likely come out of the city's
general fund, which is already facing a possible $68 million shortfall.

City officials say it would also create some
real problems for the kids who use the track.

"It's something that would delay having nationals here.
We would lose all that money, so it's more than just
tearing it down and building it back up," said

City officials say they're going to crunch the numbers and
give Councilor Benton the exact estimates for how much it
would cost to tear down the track.
