A six-old rider from a BMX club in Bulwell is on course
for stardom at the world championships in Beijing.
Lochlan Dudley, who lives in Farnsfield, has beaten allcomers to race
to the titles of county, regional and national champion in his age
group.
And now he has his sights set on world domination in China in May.
Lochlan joined the Bulwell Outlaws BMX and Mountain-Bike Racing Club,
who are based on Sellers Wood Drive, almost three years ago at the
tender age of four.
And ever since then, he has been tipped for stardom by
experienced BMX competitors who believe he has a special talent.
Lochlan's dad Kerrigan said the family – mum Philippa (36) and
seven-year-old brother Fraser – were "proud" the youngster had
done so well.
Kerrigan (42) said: "As a parent, it is a great feeling watching
him perform. And watching him win puts the icing on the cake.
"But he has done it all on his own. His attitude is
superb for his age and he really loves what he does.
"I have told him I'll help him along the way and
provide equipment but I haven't pushed him at all.
"He is already regularly beating lads who are ten years of age."
Kerrigan admits he had no knowledge of the sport
whatsoever before Lochlan developed an interest.
But now he and the Outlaws are trying to raise £3,000 to pay for
flights, accommodation, equipment and race fees for the trip to Beijing.
"We are looking for some form of help, so any sponsorship would
be welcome," said Kerrigan. "What we don't get, we will have to
make up the difference.
"We have had some very kind offers but we are
still trying to raise as much money as possible.
"Lochlan will be representing Britain against riders
from all over the world in his age group.
"The Americans are generally the world leaders in the sport
and they will be strong. But we hope Lochlan can give them
a run for their money.
"If he gets to the final, then he will be considered among the best
eight riders in the world in his age group. So that would be a fantastic
achievement."
Lochlan, who goes to Halam School, near Southwell, was crowned
national champion last September after competing over an eight-
race schedule against the top riders in his age group.
He also travels the country taking part in various tournaments.
Club treasurer Phil Gray-Blest said: "Lochlan is a real
serious talent. He is very keen and his attitude is spot on.
"I firmly believe he has a chance in China. It is great for him and
his family, great for the club and also great for Bulwell that we
have such a success story."
