The US Civil War wasn't fought to free the slaves. It was fought to
stop the Southern States from suceeding from the union. Freeing the
slaves became marketing tool for Lincoln to get recruits. He wasn't
lying of course, he was planning on freeing them, but that wasn't his
motivation for going to war. Obama, being a highly educated person,
knows this so well it probably doesn't occur to him that he needs to
point it out.

Yea, it's really a facinating subject. If there hadn't been slavery we
wouldn't have had a Civil War. And certainly slavery was on the
political radar, but when one reads the news, commentaries and
personal notes and diaries of the leaders on both sides, etc. it
becomes very clear that slavery wasn't the top priority on anyone's
agenda. As the article says, no one on either side of the war would
have said that they were going to war over slavery.

Seem to me that several prominent Southerners were slavery 'activists'
and Wealthy plantation owners needed slaves to harvest the fields and
pick the cotton. The North feot Slavery did not fit within the
excepted standards of a civil society.. However the majority of the
north felt in time slavery would run it course and end and we not
inclined to fight over THAT issue.

I think you're giving too much credit to the founders of the GOP.
Like everything else, war was fought over economics. New England
manufacturers, the core of the GOP's financing (the last vestige of
which is now vested in the two senators from Maine), needed cheap
labor. Even Irish immigrant labor was too expensive compared to the
even cheaper slave subculture the plantation owners had nurtured over
the past 300 years.
In effect, the war was fought over who was going to get that horde of
cheap labor based in the South. To put it another way, if the
Republican Party was so interested in freedom and civil rights in the
mid nineteenth century, why did Republican presidents conduct a policy
of genocide against Native Americans in the forty years that followed
the Civil War?
The answer again rests with the New England manufacturers. Native
Americans prevented or hampered the flow of goods to the west and the
flow of raw materials to the east.
