Two personal brewing milestones of a sort

I just want to share two milestones which have just occurred for me,
relative to my homebrewing interests.

Membership in my 'Grow-Hops' group has just exceeded 1,800 members, and
we have been busily discussing all sorts of issues; this has really
developed into a very nice and interesting group for anyone who wants to
combine gardening and brewing interests. Visit www.tinyurl.com/29zr8r

The 'HomeBrewer' grid computing team that I founded almost two and a
half years ago has just passed 125 _YEARS_ worth of medical research
which was completed by using the spare computer power donated by our 101
members. This is a VERY worthy cause that I try to promote periodically
because it costs you virtually nothing yet is doing so much good for all
the world -- searching for cures for diseases ranging from Alzheimer's
to Tuberculosis (anti-biotic resistant strains are a growing health risk
throughout the world). You simply donate power on your computer that
would otherwise be wasted, such as running a screen saver, or while it
is sitting idle when you talk on the phone or get a cup of coffee. And
it is VERY safe and secure; I have helped on various grid projects for
over ten years without ever having ANY problems. Just remember that the
life that you help to save with your donation could be the life of
someone you love. I hope you will at least look at my website about
this -- www.velek.com -- and about our team -- www.tinyurl.com/yjlnyv

Thanks, and good brewing to all.

I checked out some parts of your site, but don't have enough time right
now to go completely through it. I will comment, though, that your
instructions for 'all grain' are probably not what most of us typically
use. For instance, I only know a few brewers who use a "grain bag";
most of us use a tun with one of the following filtering systems:
bazooka aka 'zapap' or 'easymasher (stainless steel mesh tubing)
false bottom (a panel on the bottom with tiny holes)
manifold (generally a network of copper tubing with tiny holes or slits)

Also, I think that there are possibly as many of us who use rectangular
ice chests instead of the round beverage cooler you describe; since you
make no mention of them as an alternative, you are implying to newbiews
that they actually need a round cooler when in all probability most of
them already have a rectangular ice chest for picnics/parties/camping
that they can VERY easily use as a mashtun, especially if they were to
use batch sparging instead of fly sparging.

I'll look over more of your site when I have time. Meanwhile, I now own
the domain name www.grow-hops.com and we (members of my Grow-Hops Yahoo
group with 1,938 members) are in the process of construction of the
site, including a HopsWiki. We've just started this week, so we have a
lot of work to do, but will eventually try to get a link added to your
site. Meanwhile, link to http://home.alltel.net/billvelek/growhops.html

Thanks.

A correction here. A "zapap" is not a rolled mesh tube,
but a lauter tun constructed of nested plastic buckets, with
the inner bucket having lots of holes drilled or melted into
it. It was popularized in Papazian's seminal homebrew book
(reverse the first five letters of his name).
FWIW my first system included a zapap lauter tun. I still
have and use it for batches of small beers, with the addition
of a grain bag for better filtering.

Thanks for the correction, Joel. I'm not going to blame someone else
for feeding me bad info at some time in the past because it's just as
likely that my aging feeble mind just had a brain-fart. Sorry about
that. And 'yes', I do recall reading a description of that sort of a
lauter tun, so I don't know how I screwed that up.

Cheers.

As further evidence of my 'goof', I just double-checked the glossary
that I was working on -- last updated on 7/12/07 but I just haven't had
enough time to finish it with my other projects -- and at least I didn't
make the same mistake there. It _DOES_ describe the two-buckets, here
-- http://home.alltel.net/billvelek/glossary.html#Z :-/

Cheers.
