The peg with geared shaft came out of the tuner body. I've tried to
get it back together, but it looks like the entire tuner will have to
be replaced.
I have a spare 5th tuner, but before I proceed, I have two questions...
- Anyone corrected this condition without replacing the tuner?
- Are there varying qualities of 5th string tuners? Is one better
than the others?
Thanks in advance for answers/suggestions.

Nope. Once they come apart -which is very rare BTW- they're pretty much
cooked.

The original Kroll 5th string tuners were built to notably higher standards
than anything that's made today, but they're vanishingly hard to locate. The
current crop don't seem to have any standouts that are significatly better
than all the rest.

You're welcome, Tim.
