I posted earlier about a beginner sax player giving strings a try
post.....The Deering Goodtime appears to be the logical ax to
consider......

Now about the picks. Not a clue how to research them.

What picks are needed/required ?

thx - Craig

Two (2) steel and/or nickel-silver fingerpicks, and one (1) plastic
thumbpick. You will probably have to try several brands until you find
which ones you prefer. Opinions differ.

The metal picks will have to be bent to fit your particular fingers
(and you never lend them out, as you'll have to rebend them again if
you do), but you'll usually have to go through a box of plastic thumb
picks to find the one or two that fit *your* thumb just right.

The picks need to be fairly tight, but not *quite* tight enough to cut
off the circulation to your fingertips.

Gangrene is not a color.

Now we venture deep into the world of subjectivity.

I have been using Dunlop .018 for the finger pick and a Dunlop large
plastic thumb pick. On the thumb pick I like to have a lot of surface,
one that extends well past the thumb. I'm not crazy about the ones with
less extension.

I would play the same picks for years since they were comfortable. The
plastic thumb picks tend to break so I went through quite a few of
those.

However, I recently was in a bind and had to buy a pack of Dunlop picks
that included a metal thumb pick (#94530). The finger picks didn't have
any numbers on them but the seem thicker and stronger than the .018.

I will tell you I am not going back to the old picks. The stiffer picks
and the metal thumb pick added so much to the sound of the instrument. I
was amazed and realized the error of my ways (playing the same picks for
years). I really was stunned at the brightness of sound that the new
picks produced, and that is my current choice.

thx much - just did not want to go into a store and have someone sell
me a bunch of stuff or high end picks that I would not need. Just
need the stuff to get started and let it become an obsession
later........

My advise?

Stock up on A.1. sauce and expect a visit from PETA in the near future.
