I've always pictured her being older and wiser than the main character,
after thinking about a particular response from Aerie it seems that she is
fairly young (as in the early-mid 20's).

Anyone have some idea? or perhaps the biographies of the significantly
npc's?

In BG 1 Jaheira and Khalid are set up as guardians to the principal
character, thus giving the impression of being much older. However, if I
cast my mind back to the dim and distant past of real role-playing, round a
table with dice ant all that, I believe I would be correct to say that most
first level characters tend to begin life as late teens (although they can
be any age you like), so if Jaheira was, say, 23 or 24 she would seem much
older, I suppose. It certainly seemed old to me when I was 17 or 18.

Maybe she is old by human standards, but very young for elven ones.

Elfs can live to 1000+ yrs in the D&D world. On average i beelive the average
life for a elf is around 600-800 yrs assuming they dont die from battle or
plague or the like. Being a half elf the average life is 200-300 if i recall
correctly from the D&D books. Since its implied she adventured with gorion in
his heyday and he was prob 50-60 yr old range you'd have to assume she prob
middle age for a half elf.. around 80-100 yrs id say.

keep in mind elfs retain their youthful looks until late in their life span.

That's wonderful, but pointless, since she's a Half-Elf.

According to the AD&D 2nd Ed. PHB (the rules under which BG2 is played),
Half-Elves typically live 250 years.

As to the age of Jahiera, I have no idea.

Hope that helps.

Right on matey. And read his sign off. This twat doesn't know the
difference between dreams and reality. And let's face it, Akira's question
is definitely game based. I mean as a gamer, when a DM presents me with a
group of players, of course I want to know what the character relationships
are, however, if I see these guy's in the pub I'm only interested in the
fact of who's bought the beer and who I should look after to ensure a good
time all round (I suppose that that, in BG 1 terms mean being a good patron
at the friendly arm inn...............)

Then maybe you should refrain from replying. So how does your foot
taste?

Half-elves IIRC live for about 180 years, and reach adulthood at about 20
(when a human would reach it at about sixteen). She can't be middle aged, as
she is only 1st level when you meet her (and Khalid), although if you are by
some amazing fluke higher than 1st level when you reach the Friendly Arm she
will be the same level as you.

Elves, in 2nd Edition, stick around for a couple of hundred years and then
get bored and bugger off to some other land, like in Tolkien, although later
they were made into immortals and the other land was turned into a kind of
Elven Heaven.

> keep in mind elfs retain their youthful looks until late in their life span.

Half-elves don't, though.

I think your response was slightly inappropriate as Eric had only insulted
you mildly, if that.

Actually, although I don't like to get involved into flamefests, I think
what he said was quite stupid too, so if I may I would like to retract my

I think my response was quite apppropriate, since my intent was to help
(i.e., inform him what the core AD&D rules said about average Half-Elf
ages) & my thanks for it was to be insulted.

My response to him was not an insult. I merely informed him of
the fact that since he didn't appreciate the help I offered him, he
was free to go his merry way.

And I realized in the scheme of things, I don't really think it much
matters what Jaheira's age is.

I certainly haven't lost any sleep over it.

I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong.

I don't mind sounding, acting, or being stupid.

I make plenty of mistakes & I'm just fine with that.

But at least "I" don't rub people's noses in it when I'm right & they're
wrong, since "I" have a modicum of tact.

Since I expect to be treated with respect like I treat others,
what's-his-name's response rubbed me the wrong way.

The jack-ass you all are looking for is not me, but him.
