Apparently there was another episode last weekend. Wasn't mentioned
here, maybe you've all outgrown him. Or more likely he's just got too young.

They're not doing them regularly this year. So I missed that one. And
found out too late to see the repeat on BBC3. And iplayer doesn't work
outside the UK.

But it'll probably get repeated again sometime.

Nope - I enjoyed it (inconsistencies and all) . . .

Thanks for the heads up - I usually watch it with my eldest.

Don't you use torrents for those hard to get TV shows?

I only spotted it was on at the last minute, and having seen no comment
about it here, did actually intend to. I thought I had done - but looking at
my logs, I can see I didn't. I bet I was going to, had to go off and do
something important, then came back forgetting that I hadn't and thinking
that I had.

Mostly. But not entirely. I felt this one was something of a let down when
the story didn't go the way I thought it would - and especially the way it
did go.

See below the spoiler space if you've seen it.

Quite so. That felt so wrong for me. It was poorly considered, and poorly
executed, IMO.

When he was walking away from the base, listening to the water picking them
off one by one, the shuttle being self destructed to prevent it finding its
way to Earth, I thought - no, I *hoped* that was how the story was going to
play out. I had an inkling he was going to get a bit full of himself and
what he could do, and thought that was going to be the start of his decline
into a much darker *period* in his life, perhaps culminating with the
pending regeneration, or becoming complete at that point so that the next
actor has a darker personality. (After all, we know his personality changes
to some extent with each regeneration - because the actors tend to play him
differently).

So I thought we were going to see a very dark, downbeat ending, the Doctor
walking away from that base, hearing them suffering, scared, until the very
end when, in the TARDIS, he would hear the base's self destruct taking
effect. And I really think that would have been *brilliant*.

The next story would follow on directly, so he'd still be in his decline
from a jolly do-gooder to a someone with a more purposeful yet vengeful, "do
whatever it takes to get the job done the way *he* wants it done, screw the
consequences" attitude, tarnished by the deaths he'd witnessed (and would
come to witness) and was unable to prevent.

Spanning it out like that, I think, would have made it more believable.

But no. They sent him off on his "I'm a Timelord, I can do anything" crusade
in too short a time span, too short a story. Exactly as you said: so
SUDDENLY.

That didn't work for me. At all.

Which is a pity - because until then, I had thoroughly enjoyed the story.
That just ruined it completely.

(There is an obvious reason, though, which is perfectly reasonable and kind
of makes my opinion moot: They'd never go down that road because of the
younger audience. It's not just targetted at us grown up kids.)

Never have done, yet.

I tried torrent years ago, to get a Linux distro, without much success.
Never bothered going back to it. Think it was Mandriva 2007. I believe
it's got easier since. Well, I have a better internet connection, that's
for sure. But I've never tried it.

Also, bit wary of having tons of stuff going in and out my internet
connection, and getting cut off as a result.

Apart from that... there might be a few programs I'd go out of my way to
watch, Doctor Who being one. But I don't have the patience for much TV.
Get the odd DVD, or boxed set. Got Farscape season 1 a while back. Then
got season 2. That was a couple of months back now. Haven't watched it
yet, beyond the first 2 episodes.

Maybe I'll install a torrent client and find out what it's like. Or
maybe I'll just wait for it to get repeated on the telly.

If you have access to BBC HD, then it's on December 1st, 10pm.

Another option is BBC iPlayer - but you might *just* be outwith the regions
they limit that to.

I believe the next special, the title of which I'm deliberately not posting,
will be broadcast on December 25th. HTH. ;)

I believe Overpuddlians get The Waters of Mars on December 19th, and the
next one on December 26th.

BBCWorldwideTV are putting entire Dr Who episodes on YouTube.
I watched an episode from the 1970s yesterday.

Is that BBC on the satellite, or is it a different channel?

Just a bit :)

Was half thinking of renting a machine over there, to ssh into and get
iplayer through. If I was going to look for web hosting. But there's
enough other stuff to do that I won't bother.

I'll set an alarm. There's other stuff happening on December 25th, have
to get arse in gear before that date anyhow.

Maybe my sister will record it for me then, she lives over yonder.

It's a different channel, which sometimes coincides with what's being
broadcast on other BBC channels. I get it on Virgin Media's cable feed for
my V+ box, but I doubt it's just for them; the BBC are probably broadcasting
it on other systems. (The only one I'm sure it isn't on yet is digital
terrestrial).

A few clicks later and...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbchd/what_is_hd.shtml#service_providers

It's free to air on Sky's service, but (obviously) you need a Sky+ HD box to
be able to receive it (ie the same requirement as Virgin Media - the V+ box
is HD, none of their other boxes are). Alternatively, it's on Freesat if you
have a Freesat HD box.

There would surely have to be a fair old bit you want to watch to justiify
the cost of doing that!

I get the impression the date is significant for some. Can't think why.

Ah right. Grand, problem solved -- one of my brothers has Sky.

I use a satellite which gets a load of free to air channels, including a
bunch of BBCs and ITVs. There must be about 30 channels which all seem
to be BBC 1. There's no RTE, which is the one I pay my license for;
that's encrypted. So it goes. That's what rabbits' ears are for.

Two of the free channels that I do get seem to be "red button" channels,
if I understand the BBC's website. They've been showing an animated Dr.
Who thing nonstop, called "Dreamland". It's quite funny, in a Plan 9
kind of way.

I'll look again to see if BBC HD is one of the many thinks I don't look
at on that box :)

Well, it's on the list of things to do when I win the lotto.

Except I've stopped buying tickets :)

Well, silly you. It's so obvious, even I know it. It's Kenny Everett's
birthday.

I've just spotted that episode 1 of this is listed for BBC HD today at 17:55

It was on BBC2 this morning. Episode 2 is on BBC2 next week, though it isn't
listed for BBC HD later that day. Episode 1 is also listed for BBC 1 on 24th
December at 9:30.
