Just curious....

I never noticed this until I followed my wife home one day, but, when viewed
from the back, the exhaust pipe on the new Camrys almost looks like it was
an afterthought. It hangs low below the car, almost as if they forgot to
put the hangers on it. Is there a reason for routing it so low under the
car, away from the chassis?

Also so on the '02
My belief is that to get the 157 hp out of the i4 they needed a straight
pipe... no bends.. so went for the 'underslung' look!
It has not caused me any prolems, even on a particular drive where my '94
Regal always scraped the curb, here the '02 Camry gets by without a sound
from the bottom.

LOL...guess that's better than routing it thru the trunk.

That pipe design has been around since 92. I recall seeing the 92-96
generation of Camry's with similar bend in the exhaust pipe. I am sure if
this was a concern my many owners (exhaust damaged because of low hanging),
this would have been modified in the 97 - 01 years and even the 02 - beyond.

To clear the suspension. On the older ones it went over the suspension.
Since 1992 they have had it go under since there is not enough room above
anymore.

I think Chris is right. The Suspension clearance
thing is totally understandable.

I figure they went that route instead of *over the
Suspension* because they forgot to add a
suspension...............Geez,............my 97
bottoms everytime a good bump is encountered.

When NOT gone,...... I can be reached. MUADIB®

His point is well taken, Chris. The part of the exhaust system that
passes by the rear suspension the the current generation Camrys and
Avalons needs some rethought. Isn't the current suspension design
the same as the previous generation Camry? The earlier ones didn't
look like a hangar was broken.

People have been complaining about this exhuast for over ten years now. Do
you really think Toyota is going to change it now? 1992 was when the
suspension design was changed.

I've been complaining about the exhaust pipe hanging so low and looking ugly
also. I suspected they haven't changed the design and are just using the
old ones. My 94's exhaust is the same, but the rear end sits higher. My 97
sits lower, so the exhaust is closer to the ground and it will drag on the
ground when entering/leaving the driveway with people in the back. I can
just imagine what the newer generation must be like. It really looks bad.
There doesn't need to be so much daylight showing. Look at other cars on
the road; you don't see the exhaust hanging like the Camrys.

True. I guess there must be some engineering significance to the design
that I (we?) are not seeing.

Well, I guess if they don't get a lot of complaints about broken exhaust
pipes, this must be nothing more than an appearance issue for Toyota, eh?

Ok, the rear suspension design dates back to 1992. I see that the same
arrangement was also used in Corollas until now. But the current
generation Camry's pipe where it passes between the rear wheels NOW is
very visible where is wasn't so much so in 90's Camrys. Perhaps someone
ought to put a floor jack under the car and unload both rear
suspensions and take some measurements to determine if the suspension
arm travel REALLY justifies SO much clearance from the exhaust pipe.

Are you up to the task? ;^)

Considering I have no access to any Camry's right now other than my moms
1991, no. We did get complaints about them since 1992, and I can't say that
there are more now. Doesn't really matter anyway. About the only time I have
seen any exhuast damage was from people backing into parking blocks and
pushing the muffler forward and crushing the flex pipe in the down pipe.

You must have a 4cyl Camry then. They are sprung too soft in my opinion and
even seem to ride a little lower than the V6 Camry's.

Both my 92 and 03 Cam's are like this...on my 92, i just got the whole
exhaust system redone...told them to tuck it in nice and tight! :)

I guess I won't worry about my exhaust, then, unless I happen to see it in
the rear view mirror. Then I think I'd have a problem. <g>

Yep................it's 97 four cyl.

Great car,...............just an ugly exhaust
system.................independent rear suspension
done *properly* would eliminate the need to drop
it that low................but the car price would
show it too.
