I never noticed this until I followed my wife home one day, but, when viewed
from the back, the exhaust pipe on the new Camrys almost looks like it was
an afterthought. It hangs low below the car, almost as if they forgot to
put the hangers on it. Is there a reason for routing it so low under the
car, away from the chassis?

To clear the suspension. On the older ones it went over the suspension.
Since 1992 they have had it go under since there is not enough room above
anymore.
Chris
I figure they went that route instead of *over the
Suspension* because they forgot to add a
suspension...............Geez,............my 97
bottoms everytime a good bump is encountered.
When NOT gone,...... I can be reached. MUADIB®
His point is well taken, Chris. The part of the exhaust system that
passes by the rear suspension the the current generation Camrys and
Avalons needs some rethought. Isn't the current suspension design
the same as the previous generation Camry? The earlier ones didn't
look like a hangar was broken.

People have been complaining about this exhuast for over ten years now. Do
you really think Toyota is going to change it now? 1992 was when the
suspension design was changed.

Ok, the rear suspension design dates back to 1992. I see that the same
arrangement was also used in Corollas until now. But the current
generation Camry's pipe where it passes between the rear wheels NOW is
very visible where is wasn't so much so in 90's Camrys. Perhaps someone
ought to put a floor jack under the car and unload both rear
suspensions and take some measurements to determine if the suspension
arm travel REALLY justifies SO much clearance from the exhaust pipe.
Are you up to the task? ;^)

Hmmm... LOOKS sell cars, even Toyotas!
Considering I have no access to any Camry's right now other than my moms
1991, no. We did get complaints about them since 1992, and I can't say that
there are more now. Doesn't really matter anyway. About the only time I have
seen any exhuast damage was from people backing into parking blocks and
pushing the muffler forward and crushing the flex pipe in the down pipe.
Chris
You must have a 4cyl Camry then. They are sprung too soft in my opinion and
even seem to ride a little lower than the V6 Camry's.

Yep................it's 97 four cyl.
Great car,...............just an ugly exhaust
system.................independent rear suspension
done *properly* would eliminate the need to drop
it that low................but the car price would
show it too.
