I test drove a 2001 GT wagon this weekend. Wow! I had never even
considered this car. I currently have a '97 Legacy wagon. I'm short so I
really appreciated a couple less inches of headroom in the GT and it rode
soooo nice. I've also decided I want an AT (I think). I'm not having as
much fun driving my Legacy after having mostly sporty 5-speed cars so I
figured I go for an AT since it's an all-around heavier vehicle.
So, I'm getting pretty serious and wondering if I should spend the extra $$$
and get a 2001 or look around for a 2000. Opinions?

You can look, but you might not find. GT's are pretty rare birds, and
GT wagons rarer still. You might find an '00 leftover at a dealer
somewhere.
As for differences, the only one of significance of which I'm aware is
larger front brakes on '01 models. I have an '00 and the brakes are
just fine, so I'm not sure why they did it.
BTW in my opinion the GT with a stick is a much, much, happier car than
it is with the automatic. The 2.5L motor is working pretty hard to move
all of that car around, and the stick shift makes the car feel downright
sporting whereas the auto saps enough power to really take the edge off
the performance feel of the car. YMMW but if you can drive a stick, you
should definitely consider it.

I'm finding that out.

Thanks. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I love driving a 5-speed so
I'll reconsider my thoughts about getting an AT and test drive a 5-speed.

Janet,
Go for the 2001 and have the dealer hunt for *your* car - as you want it
(color, accessories, etc... But why you are asking us, I dunno....!?! ;-) )
Otherwise wait til late Sept or Oct and get a 2002.
Yeah - those GT wagons w/ 5spd are real rare! :-( My wife gets the next
car, and we were looking last fall for her. We couldn't find any GT (or GT
Ltd) wgn w/ a 5 spd last fall, and there are 7 dealers within 65 miles of us,
and 2 more in PA. One dealer had a total of 37 Legacy's & OB's (2000 and
2001s) but no GT wgn 5spd. My local dealer said he would order one if we wanted
it, but said it may be 8-10 weeks, as it may have to be built, and we'd have to
put a payment on it! So my Mrs drove an OB 5spd to try the tranny shifting,
and a GT auto wagon to see how it handled... If they made the GT w/ the winter
package, we'd probably have bought an auto GT wgn, or a GT Ltd sedan, if they
did not have that weenie spoiler on the trunk. Even if they made some sportier
GT or L colors, we may have bought.
So instead of a Subaru, we bought her (cheap$$) Honda after its lease was
over! We'll save the $ and wait til Subaru makes it how we'd like it...
ZZZZzzzzzz
Heck, by then we'll have enough $ saved to write a check for an Audi S4
six-speed wagon.

Tell me about it. I searched for 6 months to find a Subaru - ANY Subaru -
that was in my price range at the time. The dealerships in my area only
seem to stock '98+, and there's one instant auto loan place that stocks
Mustangs in the summer and ancient Subarus in the winter. But these cars
were all 10yr+ AND 100K plus. I almost gave up, and it didn't help that I
liked every Subaru (Impreza, Legacy/Outback, and especially SVX!) since I
couldn't really intensify my search. :) But in the end I finally did find
a Subie that I love. :)
Still wish I had an SVX though!

Hmm... I thought the spoiler on Subie's had some function. Maybe I'm
wrong.

nope - not a bit. Well - they do hold the high-mount third brakelight closer
