I had a car done by old Earl. They only use their own paint. The color
choices were limited. I did my own bodywork, and this had more of an
effect on the finished product than Earl's paint or his paint job. They
actually charged me a little extra to tape up the glass and chrome, but
if I remember, it wasn't too much. If I was just looking to give my old
car a new look, I guess I'd use them again. For my classic car, now
that's a different story.

You've got to be kidding...Earl Schieb has been around longer than
Moses!!! YEARS ago they used to advertise complete paint jobs for $49.00
!!! Always were known as a quickie paint job place, one of the first
(if not THE first) to go to nation-wide franchises.
Of course, to not offend someone who once worked there, or got a perfectly
good paint job there, or even owned one of the places....paint jobs depend
more on the painter than on the place it gets done. It's just that not
many "real good" painters are going to stay in a place like that for very
long, becasue they can make more money elsewhere!
We had a really nice paint job done a few years ago on my wife's 86 Camaro
at a MAACO paint shop here in Austin...was run by the best friend of a guy
I barely knew, but he recommended the place highly. I went in and talked
to the painter, looked at some of the work in progress and some of the
jobs they had finished. Looked good to me, so I decided to let him do
it. We were really pleased, but traded the car in a few months later, so
I can't brag on how good it still looks...but I brought it up as a lesson.
Go to the shop and ask them to let you see some of the work they've done
and for a few referrals...if they refuse, walk away! If they're not proud
enough of their work to show it off, you don't want them touching your
car. BTW, they used to be REAL BAD about jacking up the price for every
little thing...like this fender had a dent, that door-hinge was warped,
etc etc etc. Be sure to get a firm price quote and if it needs body work,
make them show it to you while they're writing it up.
Hope this helps.......Bob

Go ahead, rub it in, rub it in.
Sometimes you get what you pay for, if you're lucky.
I once got what I wanted out of them for the price I wanted to pay.
BTW, don't leave the car in the sun too often.
If you do, cake on the sunscreen wax.

Didn't Earl play the old guy in "Prizzi's Honor"?

Any CAR any Color!!!!! I think tuesday was a special on GREEN!
>Any CAR any Color!!!!! I think tuesday was a special on GREEN!
I had a friend who had his junk pot painted there. He didn't expect
or want much but he never expected to get what he did.
Apparently some birds had decided his hood was a good place to poop
while his car sat in line to be painted. Well, I guess the sprayer
thought it looked good too because he sprayed right over it.
Then he had asked they paint his spare rim the same color as the car.
he took it out of the trunk and put it in the back seat. Yep, you
guessed it, they painted it IN THE BACK SEAT!!!!!!!
When he asked what the F**k was wrong with them the manager said "What
do you expect for 49.95"
Gene
C'mon. I know you don't get a $2000 paint job for $99.95 at Earl's, but
this story is a little too much to swallow. Are you sure it isn't the
old proverbial "friend of a friend"?

Hey, don't believe me if you want but I WAS THERE. I'm sure more than
one of Earls customers had dirt, bird poop, lights, windows and
anything you didn't want painted that was uncovered sprayed. In fact
the only way to insure they only painted what you wanted was to mask
it yourself. maybe such things don't happen today but in the good old
days when Earl didn't have competition from Macco to worry about such
things were common.
When you asked to have your rims painted the same color as the car
they had these standard canvas masks they used to lay on the tire that
exposed only the rim. When they placed this cover over the tire in
the back seat the paint hit the seat through the exposed holes.
Anyway, believe it or not.
