will the cigarette lighter outlet handle the spare tire air
compressors that are out there?
i.e. even though I have spare fuses, I am inclined to get a compressor
that attaches directly to the battery because I think it will provide
more stable power.

the oem unit plugged into the lighter. The lighter has an overtemp
sensor that shorts the lighter out (blowing the fuse) if it gets too
hot. The first time I had a flat (in my new 944) it caused the sensor
to melt, shorting the cig lighter and blowing the fuse. So you are
right to attach to battery. Beware !!! of the pos terminal which is
very close to the metal under the windshield and very very easy to short out
