My 1983 944 has a pulsating oil pressure problem when idling. Also when
the engine is rev'ed up the pressue increases till the gauge is pegged
(50) and then suddenly drops to about 40 or 45 on the gauge. I heard
about several service bulletins are available to cover these problems.
Anybody have or know where I may find the text of these bulletins.

thanks,

Billy

the oil pressure when cold will be up about the 4th mark at idle and go
full to the top at anything above that,

After the engine has fully warmed up, it will drop to just above the
first mark at idle and maybe jitter and as you rev the engine the oil
pressure will track the rpm until about 3K where it will be at the top
or close to it.

When the engine goes above 3.5k or so the relief valve kicks in and
drops the pressure to between 4 and 4.5 and as rpm goes higher it will
stay rock steady.

According to the Porsche folks, THIS IS NORMAL FOR THE CAR,

Note: exactly where the low and high (after relieve valve opens) points
are will vary slightly with the weight of the oil you use, and the
particular condition of your engine but will be approx. as written,

hope this helps

Douglas,

Thanks for the info. It has started looking a little low only in the
lsat year or so. The gauge used to stay at the 5 mark and dropped to
about 2 to 3 at idle depending on temp. Real hot days it is around 2 at
idle and jumps around a some.

I suspect the relief spring might be getting a little weak after all
these years.

I am experiencing something like that. I changed the turbo at my ´89 951
last
summer. The oil I formerly used was not available no more so I had to use a
similar but not identical (Pennzoil Ultra Turbo vs. Pennzoil Ultra turbo S,
both 10W/40 I believe). When idling at normal temperature the pressure is
2.5-3 bar when it used to be about 4 bar. Any ideas if it is the oil or the
new turbo that causes it?

BR, Pär

I have the same 'problem'. I just assumed it was a quirk. Anyone know
otherwise?
