1987 944T with a hatch problem

Its hard to close my hatch. I have to really slam it to get it to close
properly.

Is it hard to replace the male/female ends of the hatch connectors/sockets?

no, it's not hard, but it's probably not necessary. the most common failure
is remedied with the application of light oil to the latch mechanism unitl
it moves freely

When I close my hatch, I really have to slam it to keep it closed. Wouldn't oil
make it worse, ie, lubricate it so it makes it even easier to come undone?
Someone had recommended just replacing the pins with stainless steel hatch pins
(about $25).

no. the problem is that the latches are not working - at least that is what
I've seen on EVERY 944 I've looked at in the last few years - one or more of
the latches, and the key get gummy because the oil is old - the latch
"leaves" should SNAP shut when you release them - frequently only one "leaf"
is working - fix it so they moove freely, then if needed readjust the pins -
but probably fixing the latches so they can move will fix it

note - you should also reoil the inside mechanism on the door handles before
the pot metal fails
