rear hatch seal [on glass part not body] replacement question.
basically, is this seal two pieces or one? and does replacement of
the one that is under the spoiler mean disassembling the spoiler+frame
+glass+[etc.?]?
the Porsche manual shows a diagram (don't have page/version) with one
seal that LOOKS like its the frame (part 38) then, at the rear of the
diagram, part 38A is shown in cross-section, shaped like this seal i
am talking about - so it sounds like both 38 and 38A are parts for the
same "job".

i don't think so - i have read a lot about that on this group, etc. -
there is some space between the rear body and hatch seal. also, the
specific seal i mentioned (38A) is sorta worn out. it looks like its
between the spoiler and the frame...
> If yes, there is an excellent FAQ on this
hmm.. actually, i suppose the seal 38A is addressed in this - then, is
is feasible to replace only that seal that sticks out the back? or
are you saying that the whole hatch has to be disassembled in order to
replace the one seal, i.e. there are not two seals, but one?

p.s: i haven't lost the notes on hatch repair!

the rubber piece 38A [1] looks worn out [2] is not mating with the
body, i.e. there is clear space between the seal on the hatch and the
target piece on the body where a bona fide seal (i assume!) ought to
be made.
... the uber-symptom is leakage in the back, but i figured i'd focus
on this 38A seal. i know there's a bunch of usenet stuff on leakage,
but i haven't focused on that yet.

ok - 38A "goes across the rear of the spoiler". that's the one.

OFF-TOPIC : fyi i'm fixing this 'salmonrushdee' silliness.

I am very suspicious that you have glass separation but unless you are near
me I can't look at it and tell you for sure. Note that when the glass
separates, the gass springs are able to distort the frame and you will see
separation because the frame is no longer straight. Where exactly is the
"clear space" - is it in back between the pins? on top? on the sides?

i've been vigilant on this glass separation i have heard about.

huh - it does seem to close unevenly - i suppose i can pour water on
the hatch to see if it leaks.

gonna try a diagram here :
--|--------|-- <- spoiler - vertical bars are pins.
||||||||||||||||| <- 38A hanging down from spoiler
--[]------[]-- <- metal body - [] are where the pins go in.
^^^^
|--- clearest gap -- 1-2cm -- is here, between the pins.
... but the rubber wings around the flap latch housings aren't
perfect.
if its easy to replace 38A to eliminate wind noise, i'd do it. but i
see what you are getting at with the bigger problem.
