No "evasion", just the simple fact that you know as well as I do that
Usenet isn't the place to post personal details like that... unless, as in
the past, promotion can either serve the work or is the work itself.

For example, my television commenrcials for Nissan Autos, produced by Basset

"This was a TV commercial we did for Larry Rich Nissan in LaGrange

Your promotion doesn't "serve the work", and isn't the "work itself"
because you don't work here, nor does your promotion work on the
people you force it on here, because you haven't received any work
from your promotion. Your promotion is only intended to serve you,
the worker, and it doesn't even do that.

That's Duck work. It's you preening again. It's just you looking for
another gig in the most unprofessional manner possible, given the
limitations of this medium. Keep up the good work. All indications
are that it'll take you at least as it's brought you thus far.

In your opinion. The facts seem to indicate otherwise, though:

"This was a TV commercial we did for Larry Rich Nissan in LaGrange Georgia.

enjoy a 350% increase in the month of March! Videography by Allen Matthews

A "350% increase in the month of March" sounds like some damned fine work to
me, relatively.

Wasn't the commercial(s) for a local used car dealer? If not I'll be
looking for it on prime time television directly from Nissan.

So it wasn't for Nissan. Thanks for confirming yet another one of your

What it sounds like is exactly what it is, the self-promotional blurb
of a professional advertizer looking for more work for their ad
company. Their comment serves their work. It tells professional
people what they do, and how they view themselves in a professional
light. Again, your self-promotion of their self-promotion doesn't
"serve the work", your work, so much as it promotes their self-
promotion, their work; it doesn't serve you any more than as a single,
small resume acting credit; i.e. it doesn't count for much in the eyes
of people who hire talent for commercials.

I wouldn't think, "That Will Dockery is a real piece of work, always
promoting himself for one thing or another.", is the kind of
impression you'd want to leave people with, because it doesn't
represent you as the person you want people to see, which I assume is
Will Dockery the performer rather than Will Dockery the self-promotion
specialist who never went anywhere.

If you want people to learn more about you and care to check you out,
you have to let them do part of the work. You have to make them want
to seek you out. Nobody can want to seek you out if you're always in
their face with multiple links to your "look at me" stuff. Try to
allow yourself to just be in the moment as you respond to people.
They'll see you without you having to point at yourself, and they'll
either like what they see or they won't. People can like what they
like, and the only way you can infuence what they like is by doing the
best work you can, not by trying to correct what you perceive are
inaccurate opinions of you and/or your work. Doing that has proved
mostly, if not completely, a waste of time.

Well, you have a point, but it was still a blast to make, whatever
their agenda was.

Their agenda was to do their jobs professionally, conduct business,
make money, and have a blast in the process. You skipped all of the
formative steps to focus on the blast you had when nobody other than
you cares one little bit about what a blast you had, because it's
either about the work or it's not about the work, and of those two you
are not about the work when all you do is go on about the blast you
had. Real people work, and through the process of work, struggle, and
eventual achievement learn to respect the work of others.

Your cavalier, "whatever their agenda" reflects your lack of
understanding, and therefore a lack of respect for their hard work;
everything that went into making that commercial, from concept to
story board to lights, camera, action. You act like the star when all
you really were was just cheap labor. A dancing bear with a sign on
his neck would have cost them more than what they paid you.

That's probably why we got along so well and made such a good little
film.

You didn't make a film. I doubt anything you did was on film because
commercials aren't usually filmed. If you knew anything at all about
the industry, you wouldn't have even said "made such a good little
film" because it sounds ridiculous.

Somebody else made a commercial in which you were the onscreen
'talent'. You didn't have anything to do with the actual making of
the commercial which is why you weren't credited with having anything
to do with the making of the commercial. You were credited as talent
only, and paid less than accordingly.

You didn't even make union scale wages for the work you did. There is
even a professional standard for the commercial work you did, and you
agreed to work below standard which has as much to do with why you got
the job as any 'talent' you possess.

Okay, I'm aware of your low opinion of the work I produce, the art I
create, and so on, so you don't really have to keep repeating
yourself. I posted the link here so others can check it out for
themselves and form their own opinions.

Good. So much for that. On to the next thing. You're apparently not
aware, or fail to recognize, the great potential I see in you. Think
about it. Who in their right mind would've spent the time I've spent
lecturing you if they didn't think you had great potential.

> I posted the link here so others can check it out for

Doing that once or twice is fine. Doing that repeatedly establishes
an opinion of you independent of your work in the commercial. Your
spammish scammish posting habits detract from your message, which is
your art. Make your art, and let it speak for you. Stop trying to
shove it down people's throats. Imagine your opinion of someone who
kept beating you over the head repeatedly with the same opinion of
your work, your art, and so on. I mean, gosh. Can you imagine?

> Anyway, take car & have a nice holiday.

Sorry, Corey, I seem to be a bit thin-skinned over the holidays... and
I admit yours is one of the more difficult personalities to get a
handle on. Perhaps if I knew you in real life I'd be able to more
fully put all the complex pieces together. I have a few friends like
that, and those I generally tend to stay away from on the internet as
signals get crossed from both sides so easily... but I digress...

Serious question, though: Since, as I've pointed out previously, that
I actually got the concept of sig-link-quote from Dennis Hammes, and
it worked well for him as he used it at the end of every single Usenet
post he ever made, why didn't that get any complaints from you...
singling me out for all this gives me the feeling of an attempted
persecution campaign against me.

> your art.  Make your art, and let it speak for you.  Stop trying to

I understand that's how you see it, but I'm really, really not doing
that. I do provide links for those who might be interested in having a
look at what I do, or if the subject discussed warrents a link. But
maybe in 2011 I'll be able to come up with a way to manage this that's
less offensive to you, since in many cases you seem to be the only
person reading this.

Might be a good resolution, there... the stopping smoking one was a
complete success, btw, not a single cig smoked in all of 2010!

I saw one of those tiny little electric ones in a Wal-Mart parking lot

Hopefully I'll only have to say this to you once. Fuck Dennis Hammes,
and what or why he did anything. Listen to me. Be yourself. Make up
your own reasons for doing shit based on why shit works for you, and
just run with it. Don't look back. You're feeling something alright,
but you've got it all ass backwards. I'd much rather promote you than
persecute you, but if you're going to act like a dick, I'm going to
treat you like a dick. And if you fuck with me, I'm going to fuck you
up. That's pretty much the standing deal I have with everybody who
knows me, both friends and the not so friendly.

You don't get to say what you're doing or not doing. Your audience
tells you what they see, and you either listen to your audience or you
don't. When you don't listen to your audience, and continue to
perform irrespective of their wishes, your audience gets pissed.
Sometimes they throw shit; but mostly they just get up and leave.
Whether you'll take responsibility for it or not, you've chased a lot
of people off with your spam.

That's a great accomplishment. You should be proud. In
alt.support.stop-smoking that would qualify you for Old Fogey status.
By the way, you should read and write there. It's a good group of
very supportive people.
