Has anyone changed their starter in a late 80's Pathfinder? How on
earth do you get the upper bolt off? It seems to be blocked from every
direction I try to get a wrench or socket on it. Please don't say I
have to pull the exhaust pipe. That looks to be a nightmare I want to
avoid if at all possible.

I've not worked on your model, so don't know the answer for sure.
In many instances the tool needed is a special box wrench with a
curved handle. These tools are called obstruction wrenches. Some
people call them "starter and manifold wrenches".

yes that bolt is a bit tough, a narrow box wrench will do the job-craftsman
wrenchs are too thick to get between bolt and starter. the fun part after
you get the starter loose is getting the thing out. you will have to move
trans lines if automatic and drop idler arm and link to remove, it's a tight
fit between engine and motor mount good luck. nissan tech
