Brake lights

I was driving my 69 cougar at the beach last weekend and was stopped
by the local police and told my brake lights were not working.
2 hours of working and I had to wire though my emergency flashers to
have lights to get it home.
I changed the signal switch in the column, and still no lights.
checked the switch and it still works when it is powered, but nothing
to the brake lights.
still have turn signals and they still are sequential. I am baffled
and have the dash on my garage floor looking for a fix.
any ideas?
