Seems to me that there was a carburetor (remember those things) back in the 40's that heated the gasoline so that a vapor rather than a liquid spray was pumped into each cylinder.  The efficiency was supposed to be very good, although it was only a few percent better - never 50%.  The downside was the possibility of it exploding, which apparently happened.  I don't remember the name, but it never caught on.
