I think cars from the UK would be about the closest match when it comes to
meeting ADR's for something that's actually designed to meet UK regulations
(which are probably EU-wide ones these days?).

I've wondered about this myself since I keep an eye on the Caterham website,
etc. and have been curious to know if anyone in Oz has a Caterham that's
been imported here and built locally then complied/insured/registered, or
imported fully-built and put through the approval/insurance/rego process.

My daughters boyfriends father recently imported a Morgan from the UK last
year, it was a brand new Roadster in British Racing Green.
it is fully registered and insured in NSW. While I haven't gone for a drive
in it yet, I have sat in it and then cleaned the drool off the tan leather
seats :-)

Now that would be a really nice vehicle to drive! It looks horrible on land
rovers, but 'british racing green' suits roadster-type vehicles perfectly.

Do you know what had to be done for it to be registered and insured here?
Was it a simple matter of paperwork or was a full engineering inspection,
etc. needed along with a drawn out process of chasing up government
officials to get the right certifications?

GTM have an Aus. dealer - if I remember right they use something akin to
our low volume type approval.

The individual "approvals" needed for Oz are too expensive to seriously
contemplate for one off designs.
There are a number of kitcar suppliers in Oz & each has undertaken this
process so that the builder/purchaser does not have to.
Effectively (as I understand things) they have "Type Approval".
If in doubt contact several & they can give precise & accurate advice.
Regarding the "Caterham", I am pretty sure there is an equivalent look alike
offered in Oz, probably under license.
Pete.

Not quite true, I know many people who have made one of "kit" cars and
got them registered in Australia although it is getting more difficult
or I should say more expensive mainly due to the cost of buying a very
late model engine that complies with current emission rules.

Westfield, PRB, Elfin, Leitch from NZ, Nota and Puma to name just a few.

At the risk of more or less repeating myself, there's an Australian
distributor for these cars.

http://www.caterham.com.au/contact.htm

and why have we revived a 3 month old thread?

Cheers,
Steve

No idea why this old thread was revived and, FWIW, the kit I was originally
enquirling about was not a caterham.
