I want to know what everyone thinks about paint jobs. I hear that Maaco
does a really crappy job, yet they are the only place that i know of to get
a paint job. Plus they are kinda cost efficient. Cause you can get a paint
job for 200-400 dollars. But i would like to know if anyone has had
problems with Maaco...or if you've gotten a better deal or whatever...
thanks...

Well, a friend of mine got his 79 El Camino painted by Maaco. He didn't get the
bottom-of-the-line job, though. His was around $900, and it looks pretty good. I
can't get a very good look at the quality, as his truck is always dusty or muddy
or something. There are a few runs (he says), but it looks decent to me...

Simply put you get what you pay for at Maaco or anywhere else. If you
want a better quality job you'll need to pay more. Any car dealer that
has a body shop or any independent body shop can paint your car, Maaco
is not your only choice. Check your yellow pages. Be informed, know
what a quality job is or you can really get ripped by these guys.
Remember that the preparation before painting is probably one of the
most important parts to a good paint job.

In my opinion, Maaco is a rip off. I took my car in for one of their
"specials" (bait and switch specials) and they talked me into an
upgrade, plus they said the old paint would have to be stripped or
else they wouldn't be able to warrantee the job. So the $200 was up
to a tousand bucks. When they stripped the paint, they also stripped
some old body putty left over from a fender bender. So they called
and said I would have to pay extra to redo the body work ... that I
should have warned them about the body putty. More money.

The paint job looked great but in six months it was faded out. They
repainted it for no charge, but talked me into another upgrade which
was to last longer, and I had to pay the difference. Six months
later, that paint job was fading so I went back again. Now they said
the paint would have to be stripped because there were too many coats
and they would paint if for free but I would have to pay to have it
stripped. I walked away and never went back, and I will never go
back to Maaco.

I bought a compressor and spray gun and painted the car myself, in
the driveway, bugs and all, and got as good a job for a lot less
money and it lasted several years. I used acrylic enamel automotive
paint from Sherwin Williams.

That's my experience with Maco

HeHe...I'm thinking of doing the same....SEARS has a 25 gallon Compressor
for $300, that inclludes Compressor, Paint Gun, Air Ratchet, and Blow bits n
such....That way I can paint it a different color every week...J/K...But How
much would paint cost me to cover a Full Size Car...Including primer and a
clear/Gloss coat or 2..

Here are some prices I paid in summer 1999 for Dupont paint products:

1 quart self-etching primer with 1 quart converter = $44.65
1 gallon Primer surfacer = $63.72
2 quarts Primer/Filler = $46.94
1 quart Primer/Sealer with 1 quart activator = $47.25
1 gallon Chroma Base basecoat with basemaker = $207.39
1 gallon Chroma Clear with 1 quart activator = $171.00

Add solvents, sandpaper, flex additive (for soft parts), filler, masking tape,
and all of the little things you never think of until you are in the middle of
the project, and the price can double.

PPG paints are comparable in price. However, they now offer a line of products
called the Omni System at much better prices. Compare the following prices for
1 gallon of basecoat with 1 gallon of activator: Dupont = $207.39 Martin
Senour (NAPA) = $200.00 PPG = $217.80 Omni = $72.97. Likewise 1 gallon of
clearcoat with 1 quart of activator: Dupont = $171.00 Econo-Body (NAPA) =
$58.98 PPG = $168.17 Omni = $68.90.

The PPG dealer claims the Omni products are good. He has no reason to lie,
since he could steer me toward the PPG paint at triple the price if he wanted
to. The only negative of which I am aware is that some of the more exotic colors
are not available. I am definitely giving it a try on my next project.
