I still believe that it's the thermostat, maybe I just got a bad one? At $30
bucks a copy, I don't want to keep changing this part until the problem goes
away.
Anything else that could cause this kind of problem that I've missed?

Check with the Turbo Diesel Register. This was considered "normal" buy Dodge and
Cummins although I don't see how all of those thermal cycles could be good for the
engine. I thought they came up with a thermostat that didn't do that. Sounds like
you got one of the old t'stats..

I agree, I don't think that flushing cold water through a hot engine every 5
minutes is good either. Funny, even the off-brand Stant thermonstat had the
same symptoms. I put a new Cummins unit it (from Dodge), and it behaves MUCH
better, but not as steady as it was a few weeks ago. I wonder if the Cummins
Dealer has a better price than Dodge....
