1995 Dodge 2500 4x4 Ram 5.9 Diesel.
My temp gauge just started to cycle up and down, between around 150 to 180
degrees. This happened about 4 years ago--I fixed it with a new thermostat.
This time I put a new thermostat in, but the problem continues (it moves back
and forth between 150 to 190 degrees now, so changing the thermostat did
affect the symptoms.) Before failure, the temp stayed rock-solid around 170
degrees.

I still believe that it's the thermostat, maybe I just got a bad one? At $30
bucks a copy, I don't want to keep changing this part until the problem goes
away.

Anything else that could cause this kind of problem that I've missed?

Thanks for your help.

Check with the Turbo Diesel Register. This was considered "normal" buy Dodge and
Cummins although I don't see how all of those thermal cycles could be good for the
engine. I thought they came up with a thermostat that didn't do that. Sounds like
you got one of the old t'stats..

There ia a low leak thermostat avalable to stop this problem. Dodge and Cummins
both have them. I don't remember the part number.

Thanks for the info. I've not heard of the Turbo Diesel Register. Is this
available online?

I agree, I don't think that flushing cold water through a hot engine every 5
minutes is good either. Funny, even the off-brand Stant thermonstat had the
same symptoms. I put a new Cummins unit it (from Dodge), and it behaves MUCH
better, but not as steady as it was a few weeks ago. I wonder if the Cummins
Dealer has a better price than Dodge....

Thanks again,

Michael
