I have a 1996 Dodge 3500 Van, V-8. The van is in good shape, runs and starts
and fine most of the time. However, occasionally the engine will turn over but
not attempt to fire regardless how long you try. The only solution is to let
it sit, sometimes for days, but when its ready it starts almost instantly.

It doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold. It will work perfectly for
days, then the next time you try to start it, no go. I took it to a mechanic
and it wouldn't start. They pushed it inside and suddenly it started and they
were unable to make the problem occur again despite trying for a week.

Any suggestions?

Check the break/clutch/transmission shift position sensor/switch.

Quick tap with a rubber mallet in the area of the switch/sensor when it
won't state will likely tell you a lot.

I should have mentioned it is an automatic, shifter on the column. Where
would I look for the switch? On the column or on the transmission itself?

Not at all familiar with this specific vehicle so don't have a clue where
the switch might be located.
