What would it cost to get a top of the line pearl like custom paint job?
Like the kind you see on show cars NOT the garbage the factories put out.

you are going to find that it is very expensive, i am having my 87
painted right now, there was very little body work to be done, almost
none. i own a repair shop and am getting a buddy deal from a local
body shop guy that we refer people to each other, this is a compleat
job, mouling off, doors off hatch off, mirrors, emblems, etc, i am not
expecting a show quality paint job, but it will be close, three stage
paint, i feel lucky he is doing it for five grand. your cost will
vary. good luck. Greg

I paint my own -- far from show quality, but serviceable, and then a ton of
elbowgrease to get it closer -- and I usually spend close to a grand just on
the paint. Almost nothing for the brush, though. Nah, kidding.

What ever you get it won't hold up like the factory "garbage" and if it cost
less than 10 grand you got the same "Garbage". The factory has better
everything, preparation, materials, and material control, yes, I know there
are still some questionable paint jobs come out of the factories. Even the
great Ferrari's paint jobs have their problems and they are wet sanded and
repainted sometimes more than once before they are hand rubbed out.

There is a 57 fuelie next door to me that is a show car and it's on it's
third paint job in 6 years. It's had nothing but the best and it was for
show (trailer queen), the factory paint jobs are to use. Roomer has it that
he's turned down over a hundred grand for it, you know why? He might just
have more than that in it. You pay for what you get.

So I guess my plan to buy a new SL600 and have it custom painted is
downright insane?

Well, I don't think that's insane. You could probably get it painted while
you have the engine replaced and the interior upgraded. J/k. A paint job
is one of the few ways we can mark a vehicle with something of our own
taste. The cars today just look so similar, and I love that we are supposed
to know them by their insignias because the manufacturer doesn't put their
name on the vehicle half the time. Hell, I go back so damned far, I can
remember the cross-country trips where the entertainment was naming every
car we met or passed, including the model and year. It was a do-able thing,
and the game lasted as long as the trip. Excuse me while I go plow a field
since I'm feeling nostalgic now.

That would be my guess, or just plain crazy. The ten grand was based on
painting a Corvette, not a tin car.

Best to you because you might need it.

I'd hope the 600 would be an exception, but MB having an awful lot of QC
problems lately.

thats a very good price Not. my shop , vette paint jobs start at 5k for same
color, outside only. even at that , the owner gets screened, and if i dont
like his attitude, or think he or she is particularly anal, i wont paint it
at all. thats for a 2 stage, car stripped, handles, mldgs etc removed. nice
job. hell , im a vette guy, so they get a little (lot) of personal qc and
attention, when we do em. i wont paint anything european for any price. can
never make the people that drive em happy. last piece of euro-trash we
painted, the owner came to pick it upand just picked and picked. told him
ok, give me a couple weeks and ill touch up this and that. parked the car in
the lot , didnt do shit to it. washed it, waxed it, called the owner to pick
up. he looks the car over and loved it. thats the kind of people you deal
with on those buckets. ok rant off. truth of the matter, there is no such
thing as a perfect paint job. no matter what the cost, if the painter wanted
to, he could walk the car with you and show you the flaws. 99% of people
would never see it, but the guy that shot it could.

yes i thought it was more than a good price, the euro-trash kinda hits
home here, my repair shop does about 80% made in europe, so i do
understand where you are coming from. i am still thinking of painting
the body mouldings to match the car.

It's just that the choice of colors is so limited. If I'm going to pay that
much for a car I at least want it to be the color I want. My C5 is black
with red interior and that's how I wanted it but the SL600 doesn't look like
anything special in black (my favorite non-color btw).

I own 2 Mercedes and both have flawless paint. One of them is 8 years old
and sits outside. The other is a 2003. I keep them waxed and they look like
brand new. MB paint is extremely durable and anything done to it after it
leaves the factory will not be as good. Just my 2 cents. My wife's M3 has a
good factory paint job but it can stand up to the MB quality. I would not
believe every thing that you read in publications and the internet about QC
issues at MB.

My C5 is black also. It looks awsum in the shade and at night nothing
beats Black IMO. I have pitting on my front end . Also a small ding in
the rear corner, paint is cracked there. I want to get it touched up.
I wonder how much that would cost? I dont have alot of money for that
kind of stuff. Kids and stuff :) Im lucky i got a vette at all.

Shop around. I got my '87 painted with a custom color for $4,000.00 I
used a shop which was used by new car dealers and not starving for
business. I spoke with th sprayer before hand and made sure he could
handle fiber.
Expect to pay between $4000.00 6000.00.
My color is Candy Apple Red Metallic. Paint Dupont Imron.
