I paint my own -- far from show quality, but serviceable, and then a ton of
elbowgrease to get it closer -- and I usually spend close to a grand just on
the paint. Almost nothing for the brush, though. Nah, kidding.
There is a 57 fuelie next door to me that is a show car and it's on it's
third paint job in 6 years. It's had nothing but the best and it was for
show (trailer queen), the factory paint jobs are to use. Roomer has it that
he's turned down over a hundred grand for it, you know why? He might just
have more than that in it. You pay for what you get.

So I guess my plan to buy a new SL600 and have it custom painted is
downright insane?
Well, I don't think that's insane. You could probably get it painted while
you have the engine replaced and the interior upgraded. J/k. A paint job
is one of the few ways we can mark a vehicle with something of our own
taste. The cars today just look so similar, and I love that we are supposed
to know them by their insignias because the manufacturer doesn't put their
name on the vehicle half the time. Hell, I go back so damned far, I can
remember the cross-country trips where the entertainment was naming every
car we met or passed, including the model and year. It was a do-able thing,
and the game lasted as long as the trip. Excuse me while I go plow a field
since I'm feeling nostalgic now.
That would be my guess, or just plain crazy. The ten grand was based on
painting a Corvette, not a tin car.
Best to you because you might need it.

Life is a sexually transmitted Disease that is always fatal.
I'd hope the 600 would be an exception, but MB having an awful lot of QC
problems lately.
It's just that the choice of colors is so limited. If I'm going to pay that
much for a car I at least want it to be the color I want. My C5 is black
with red interior and that's how I wanted it but the SL600 doesn't look like
anything special in black (my favorite non-color btw).
I own 2 Mercedes and both have flawless paint. One of them is 8 years old
and sits outside. The other is a 2003. I keep them waxed and they look like
brand new. MB paint is extremely durable and anything done to it after it
leaves the factory will not be as good. Just my 2 cents. My wife's M3 has a
good factory paint job but it can stand up to the MB quality. I would not
believe every thing that you read in publications and the internet about QC
issues at MB.

My C5 is black also. It looks awsum in the shade and at night nothing
beats Black IMO. I have pitting on my front end . Also a small ding in
the rear corner, paint is cracked there. I want to get it touched up.
I wonder how much that would cost? I dont have alot of money for that
kind of stuff. Kids and stuff :) Im lucky i got a vette at all.
