Subject: Superchip for 6.5l Turbo Diesel
Can anyone tell me what kind of performance chips are available for the
Chevy 6.5l Turbo Diesel? Not having much luck finding one, but I know they
are out there cause the first truck I looked at had one, but it sold and
disappeared. Thanks for any help you can offer...

there is no add-on chips available for the 6.5TD as far as i know. however,
you can get it reprogrammed by someone [http://www.bd-power.com comes to
mind] it is good for like 40 hp and 70 trq. if you don't want to go that
route, how about LPG injection? propane will give you up to 100hp, 250 trq
increase. the powershot 2000 seems to be the best user friendly available
model right now. it runs off the vapor port on a lpg tank. some of the other
systems available run off the liquid side. if your motor were to ingest
liquid propane, you can say goodbye to it...

i just remembered that it was the 96 - 00 model that needed the computer to
be reprogrammed. if it is a 94 - 95, you can just install a chip.

Thanks. You seem to know your stuff on theses engines, how long have you had
one? Do you like them? Are they any good? I seem to get a lot of mixed
stories, so far though I like mine, but only had it 2 months.

Subject: Re: Superchip for 6.5l Turbo Diesel
i have had my 6.5TD since december 1997. most of the stuff that i have
learned has come from the http://www.thedieselpage.com forums and site. it
is amazing how much stuff there is available there. and with the internet
the way it is now, you can find almost anything. i originally started
searching for power upgrades for my tahoe, but i decided to go back to
school so that removed all the funds that i had so i never did buy any power
upgrades [propane was what i wanted] i did however do some stuff like making
my own 4" exhaust from the turbo downpipe back [no soot trap (aka cat), no
mufflers] and i tinkered with some alternative plumbing of the wastegate
vacuum lines [i made a vacuum accumulator out of ABS pipe] one thing i still
want to do is to advance the timing a few degrees to give it some more
grunt..

looking back, i haven't had real bad luck with my diesel. i have had 1
injection pump failure @ 15,000km that was replaced under warranty. i have
had 2 egr failures [@ 25,000km & 54,000km] [stupid system..] and along with
the egr failures, 2 soot trap failures [got all plugged up] and some leaky
oil cooler lines [common problem, leaks at union of aluminum & rubber lines]
that's all the trouble  i have had with the engine. other problems, i have
had 3 U-joint failures [damn lifetime lube..] my limited slip is wearing
out. broken head light switch assembly [dome lights would flicker on and
off] - a wind powered shopping cart in a costco parking lot smacked my
tailgate leaving a dent, and some jackass backed into my drivers side door
denting it [ i would kill who did it, but it was hit and run] and 4 burnt
out lights [2 front corner markers, 2 rear turn/brake lights]

i am also members of http://www.turbodieselregister.com and
http://forums.ford-diesel.com . i am generally interested in diesel engines,
and my next vehicle is more than likely going to be a 2004 dodge with the
cummins diesel. if i get something different, it will be a diesel. [i don't
like gasoline engines except in performance vehicles]

What I have seen of thedieselpage looks really great, guess I should join, I
really like the "how to get 350hp from your 6.5TD. That is definitely on my
to do list, but I'll probably wait until I need to do some serious engine
work. I upgraded my exhaust to 3" and that was a huge difference. My engine
in an "F" type or so I'm told. which means no emissions (egr, cat, fewer
problems, etc...) but I'll wait and see on that. Propane sounds cool, but
will wait till I do engine upgrade. What did the vacuum accumulator do for
the turbo? And what do u mean advance the timing? I thought (from what I
have read) that -1.94 degrees was what u wanted to get? Thanks again

Subject: Re: Superchip for 6.5l Turbo Diesel
the -1.94° is the timing advance. it is done by turning the pump towards the
drivers side and setting the tdc on the pump using a tech 2 scanner. it is
kinda of a hit and miss setup. .i don't have a tech 2 that i can get my
hands on any time soon, and i don't want to pay some dealer 1 hours labor
rate to do a 15min job.

if you have a 2500 or 3500, you have the "F" motor. if it is a 1500, it more
than likely is the "S" motor [S = slow, F = fast . that's how i see it lol
;) ]

the vacuum accumulator delays the wastegate activation. it allows me to hold
boost to a higher RPM and gives me a little more boost too. because i have
the mass air flow sensor, the boost controllers [a pot that are wired to the
map sensor] can not be used without the computer going wacky. it may be that
only the egr equipped engines suffer from this problem.

my accumulator is a piece of 3" abs pipe that is about 10" long. it is
sealed at both ends [one end has an inspection plate. i have 2 fittings at
the other end. one for w/g vacuum in and one for w/g vacuum out. the in
fitting has a 1/16" restriction in it so when the canister fills is under
vacuum, it bleeds off slower to keep the w/g closed longer. one bad thing
about my setup is if it goes to 0 vacuum [like if you run to the governor in
2nd and don't shift to 3'rd right away, the vacuum takes a while to refill
the accumulator, causing loads of smoke. i need to tinker with it some more
to work that problem out of it. [ i think i need a check valve and a
restriction bypass to make it work]

Nick,

Is there any simple fix for the leaking oil cooler lines?  Mine have started
to weep at the factory joint between the rubber hose and the aluminum pipes
and I'm not too pleased about it (but with close to 130,000 miles, I guess I
can't complain too much).  I have put on some heavy duty high pressure hose
clamps around the crimped flanges and that seems to have helped some, but I
know that it's not a permanent fix.  Any suggestions?

Cheers - Jonathan

you can go 2 ways here. you can go with factory gm ones that will leak, or
get some made. if you have the skills to fabricate something up, you can get
a variety of fittings some lines from a shop that sells hydraulic supplies
and make your own. if you do them right, they will not leak.

my current set are leaking, but i just wrapped a shop rag around the line to
keep it from dripping on the driveway.

i am trying not to spend too much  $$$ on her right now. i am currently not
employed full time [2 part time jobs though...] and i am planning on
purchasing a new truck next summer [2004 cummins HO diesel NO EGR SYSTEM -
dodge 3500 ext cab sb 4x4 6spd ]
2004.5 [2004 models built after dec 31, 2003] model year has the egr system.
money will be tight then, but i really don't want an egr system. and
hopefully i will have a full time job then.. damn. trucks are expensive when
new. i'm looking at ±$50,000 CDN the way i want it
