I recently swapped a vortec 4.3l v6 to a 5.0 v8 in a 1994 chevrolet pickup.
It runs fair on the prom for the v6 but badly on the chip that is supposed
to be for the v8.

If all you have to offer is that the ECM and the wiring harness need to be
changed don't waste our time, however if you can help me please respond to:
tom...@mciworld.com

I have a couple of concerns:
1.) Can anyone supply me with a wiring diagram specifically for a 1994
chevy pickup with a 305 v8?
2.) Is there an Electronic Spark Control Module on this vehicle and if
so where is it located, it's not on the intake manifold any more.
TIA

Why did you do such a thing....the 4.3 is a far better motor than the
5.0.....and you may have plenty of headaches ahead of you....I assume
you had to get a new fan shroud, possible radiator, and lots of
brackets and pulleys....all that work for about 15-20 horsepower!!!

jason,
I totally agree with you about the 4.3, however I am past the point of no
return. The original reason for the swap was a blown engine and the owner
made the choice.
The suprising part is that almost all of the 4.3 parts fit the 305. I
cut aboout 4 inches off of the fan shroud and replaced the radiator hoses
and removed the adaptor plates for the motor mounts. The starter is
different due to the size of the ring gear. all of the accessories, AC
alernator, power steering, fit the new engine BRACKETS AND ALL. Here's the
real kicker-- the water pump is the same! with the right exhaust manifolds
the exhaust system bolts up.
Now that wwe have that cleared up can you supply me any positive help?

I thought about the problem with it running.....I really don't know
much about the computer and what it does to the timing....but I
believe the 4.3 and 5.7 have the same bore/stroke, but the 5.0 (305)
is the odd ball engine with a different bore or stroke than the
4.3/5.7.....

The throttle body intake should be exactly the same on both engines
(about 600 cfm) and should wire up just the same, same for the knock
sensor, temp, oil pressure, and all the wires that go to the coil and
dist cap....

I would wonder if the computer is different...not only the prom
chip...

let us all know what the "runs badly" means and I will try to help!

jason,
I'm sorry If I sounded a little short before, but all I have been hearing
about this is why I can't do it, and I am a eliever in the saying that the
only thing you can't do is put the toothpaste back in the tube!
I have researched this thing as far as parts go. here is what I have
found out:
1.) The ECM (16196396) is the same for both configurations.
2.) The PROM (16195394) is for the 305.
3.) The PROM (BKZM 4008 old designation) is for the 4.3l.
4.) There is an ESC module listed for each configuration, they are
different. I cannot find the module on the vehicle. ALLDATA says they are
located near the throttle body, but on the 1994 vehicle with a 4.3l it isn't
there.

When I start the engine with the 305 PROM installed it starts fine and
runs for about 10 to 20 seconds ( until the system enters closed loop
operation) then it goes rich and eventually stalls. I have had it hoked up
to a scanner and confirmed that the problem starts when closed loop
operation starts. I also confirmed through the documentation provided with
the scanner that the chips' scan codes are correct (4008 for the 4.3 and
5055 {I think} for the 305), I don't remember the number for the 305 but it
was the right one.
When the 4.3l chip is installed the vehicle starts OK and will run. The
Idle is low and the shift points are slightly higher than normal. with the
scanner connected the closed loop mode seems to be working properly. It
goes from rich to lean etc. in what looks like a normal pattern. The truck
seems to have good power and except for the two symtoms mentioned above it
works ok.
TIA

did both engines have the same EGR setup? and are you using the 4.3
or 5.0 throttle body and injectors???

the 4.3 had linear egr and I don't know what a 1994 305 uses for EGR. I'm
using the injectors from the 4.3

Jason,
good news! you did it, theonly thing I didn't check into was whether the
injectors are the same, I "assumed" and you know what that means. We put
the correct injectors in and the correct PROM and wella it runs like it is
suppposed to! thanx for your help

stephen,
thanks for the response, the injectors were the answer. I didn't see any
reason why they should be different, neither did the parts guy at chevrolet,
until he looked them up. As soon as I put the injectors in that came with
the 305 it ran perfectly.
