280E W114 - Information Required

My father-in-law has just purchased a 280E Merc. (circa 1968-1970?), and has very few details that he can refer to on this vehicle, (partly because it appears to have been imported into Australia and does not have a compliance plate!). 
 
He is a mechanic and is eager to find information about the model so that he can restore the vehicle and repair a couple of problems, (in particular for the Automatic Transmission).
 
Can somebody please respond with details or reference to a web site that I can get some info. from.
