1994 BMW 740iL Transmission Program -- See Owner's Manual Error Message

I own a 1994 BMW 740il and just received the Transmission Program See
Owner's Manual Error Message in dash display. I have done the typical
pulling over and restarting the car. Problem is that when I go to the BMW
dealer, theya re more focused on selling me a brand new car. They are
recommending a new transmission at the tune of $5,600 not including the
labor. This is the second Bimmer I have owned and so far not impressed. My
Mercedes 560SEL hasn't given me one ounce of trouble since I purchased it
back in 1991. This BMW has been to the shop regularly since 1997 for
sensors etc.
